Cheltenham Festival: Gold Cup Day Results

The jewel in the crown of the Cheltenham Festival has finally arrived! Day number four, Gold Cup Day is the day where the action of the Festival truly reaches its peak, as racing fans everywhere wait to see who will claim the much-coveted Gold Cup title.

The JCB Triumph Hurdle – 13:30

Winner: Vauban

What a race to get us starting on Gold Cup day at Cheltenham. Paul Townsend the winning Jockey was elated after the race. The 4-year-old horse impressed, as he broke away from the pack at the final stretch.

Fil Dor placed second and Pied Piper claimed third. On to the next!

The McCoy Contractors County Handicap Hurdle Race – 14:10

Winner: State Man

Paul Townsend wins again in the second race of the day riding State Man to victory. It was a safe ride around the outside and the horse delivered. Number 8 could have got to him but it was a comfortable race. First Street, number 8 himself placed 2nd. Colonel Mustard ran very well and placed third.

The Albert Bartlett  Novices’ Hurdle Race – 14:50

Winner: The Nice Guy

Riding The Nice Guy, Sean O’Keeffe takes the top position in the 14.50 race at Cheltenham. He won on the 18/1. Minella Cocoona posted 2nd. Bardenstown Lad placed third.

Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup (Grade 1) – 15:30

Winner: A Plus Tard

The race we had all been waiting for, the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup was won by A Plus Tard. Of course, it was Rachael Blackmore who provided the crowds with that scintillating finish as she overtook pack leader Minella Indo in the final stages of the race. Blackmore made history by becoming the first ever female jockey to win the Gold Cup at Cheltenham. Protektorat placed third.

The Foxhunter Chase – 16:10

Winner: Billaway

Billaway bounced back in emphatic fashion to secure victory at the Foxhunter Chase. This makes it a fantastic four wins for Willie Mullins on the last day of the festival. Winged Leader placed 2nd and Mighty Stowaway claimed the 3rd spot.

The Mrs Paddy Power Mares’ Chase – 16:50

Winner: Elimay

In yellow and green hoops, Jockey M.P. Walsh gave the Cheltenham fans an exciting finish. He was prominent early on and chased the leaders throughout. His jumps were strong, he led on the flat in the final furlong and saw out the victory. Pink Legend placed 2nd and Scarlet and Dove placed third.

Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle– 17:30

Winner: Banbridge

The final race of the day and the festival as a whole! Banbridge, trained by JP O’Brien and ridden by MM McDonagh took the final spoils. Banbridge led after 2 out and stayed well the whole race. Cobblers Dream placed second. Hollow Games placed third.
