Jonbon Shloer Chase

Shloer Chase: Most Recent Winners.

One of the standout races of the iconic November Meeting is the Shloer Chase, and here we will be taking look at some of the most recent winners of this race.

The start of the three day horse racing spectacular that is the Cheltenham November Meeting will start at the famous Cheltenham Racecourse on Friday 15th November, before the action then comes to a close on Sunday 17th November.

There are several famous races that take place each year at this prestigious event, one of which is the Shloer Chase, which will renew once more this week. This year, this race will take place on the opening day of the November Meeting, getting underway at 14:20 that afternoon.

Here, we are going to take a look back at some of the most recent winners of the famous Shloer Chase ahead of this year’s race on the inaugural day of action at Cheltenham Racecourse at the November Meeting for 2024.

Defi Du Seuil (2019)

The first entry onto this list will be from the 2019 Shloer Chase, which was won by the pre-race favourite Defi Du Seuil. Defi Du Seuil, trained by Philip Hobbs, was ridden to victory in the end with Jockey Barry Geraghty on board. This was not Geraghty’s first victory in this race, having also done so with Uxizandre back in 2014.

As for trainer Philip Hobbs, he too had previous experience of winning this race, having done so with Wishfull Thinking in 2012.

In the 2019 race, Barry Geraghty and Defi Du Seuil were able to fend off the stern competition from the likes of Harry Cobden’s Politologue and Brian Hughes’ Simply Ned who finished in second and third place respectively, whilst Gavin Sheehan and Saint Calvados were fourth overall.

Put The Kettle On (2020)

The horse to win the race the year after Defi Du Seuil was Put The Kettle On, who won the 2020 renewal of the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham. The winning Jockey on this occasion was Aidan Coleman, whilst Put The Kettle On was trained by Henry de Bromhead.

It was a first win in this race for both Coleman and de Bromhead, with their horse managing to come out on top in the 2020 Shloer Chase ahead of Duc Des Genievres, ridden by Harry Cobden, and Riders On the Storm, ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies – they came in second and third place respectively in the end.

The pre-race favourite was 2019 Winner Defi Du Seuil, who was unfortunately unable to finish the race on this occasion.

Nube Negra (2021 & 2022)

The next winner, Nube Negra, was dominant in the famous Shloer Chase over two years, winning this race in both 2021 and 2022 at the annual November Meeting at Cheltenham Racecourse. Nube Negra was ridden by Harry Skelton on both occasions, with the trainer being Dan Skelton.

Starting with 2021, pre-race favourite and 2020 winner Put The Kettle On had to settle for a third place finish whilst Harry Cobden’s Politologue came in second place just behind Harry Skelton and Nube Negra.

2022 saw the second consecutive win in the Shloer Chase for Nube Negra, whose closest competition on this occasion was Gavin Sheehan’s Ganapathi in second place, whilst Adam Wedge and Daly Tiger came in third in the end.

Jonbon (2023)

We now come to the most recent winner of the prestigious Shloer Chase at the famous Cheltenham November Meeting, Jonbon, who was ridden to victory by Jockey Nico de Boinville. Jonbon’s trainer for this victory was Nicky Henderson.

This was not a first win in this race for de Boinville or Henderson. Starting with de Boinville, he has previously emerged victorious in this race on Sprinter Sacre in 2015. As for Henderson, he has won this race with Sprinter Sacre alongside Nico de Boinville, as well as Kid Cassidy back in 2013.

In the 2023 Shloer Chase, Nico de Boinville and Jonbon were able to successfully fend off some stern competition for victory from the likes of Tom Cannon’s Edwardstone and Harry Skelton’s Nube Negra who had to settle for a second and third place finish respectively.

Excitement and anticipation are growing rapidly ahead of the start of this year’s Cheltenham November Meeting at the historic and iconic Cheltenham Racecourse on Friday 15th November 2024.
