Champions League Group Stage Preview 2017/18

The 2017/18 Champions League campaign kicks off on Tuesday with the whole of Europe waiting in anticipation. For every football fan the Champions League theme tune is a sound that sends shivers down your spine.

In this article we will assess the chances of success for each of the Premier League teams involved… but can anyone de-throne Zidane’s Real Madrid?

Chelsea

Champions Chelsea will be expected to have a strong campaign. They have one of the best records by English teams over the last decade and of course won the coveted trophy in 2012. Conte has strengthened his squad over the summer to handle the amount of games they play this season. The likes of Alvaro Morata, Danny Drinkwater, Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Davide Zappacosta will add much needed depth to the squad.

The Blue’s group consists of Spanish heavy-weights Atletico Madrid, Roma and Champions League debutants Qarabag. It will be tough but Chelsea have more than enough quality to qualify from this group and will be hoping for top spot.

Liverpool

Liverpool have qualified for the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2014 and will be hoping for a strong campaign. Klopp knows his job is not finished by only qualifying, Liverpool fans will want the team to progress to the later rounds. The Reds finished 4th in the Premier League last season thanks to their devastating forward line. The likes of Coutinho, Firmino, Salah and Mane will all need to be on top form for Liverpool to compete against Europe’s elite.

The Red’s group is made up of Sevilla, Maribor and Spartak Moscow. They will be expected to not only qualify but to take top spot in the group.

Man United

After winning the Europa League last season Manchester United are back where they belong in Europe’s elite competition. Despite a disappointing Premier League campaign United still enjoyed a lot of success in the cup competitions winning the Community Shield, League Cup and Europa League. With world-class talents like Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba, David De Gea & Zlatan Ibrahimovic United could be dark-horses this season.

The Red Devil’s group consists of Basel, Benfica and CSKA Moskva… anything less than 1st place will be seen as failure for Mourinho.

Man City

Manchester City’s owners have not hidden their desire to win the Champions League and have put their money where their mouth is. Pep Guardiola has been given over £220m to spend on players and has recruited Kyle Walker, Benjamin Mendy, Ederson, Danilo and Bernardo Silva. City finished 3rd in the Premier League last season, despite it being a disappointing campaign Pep will be much more experienced this season and most importantly will have his own squad.

Manchester City’s group is made up of Dutch champions Feyenoord, Shakhtar Donetsk and Napoli. City are favourites to top their group but could face some difficult away days in Holland, Ukraine and Italy.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur qualified for the Champions League by finishing second in the Premier League after an impressive campaign. Golden Boot winner Harry Kane was the star man for Spurs as they made a challenge for the title. The London side left it until late with their summer transfer business but still managed to add star quality to their squad with Serge Aurier, Fernando Llorente and Davinson Sanchez all coming in.

Tottenham have the hardest draw in this year’s competition after being drawn with current holders Real Madrid, German heavyweights Borussia Dortmund and APOEL.
