The Cesarewitch Trial Day, also known as the Cesarewitch Handicap and is one of the most historic and prestigious horse racing events on the calendar. It’s history stretches all the way back to 1839. The first ever winner of this event was Cruiskeen who won it for the first and only time. The most recent winner of the event is Run For Oscar, who was ridden by David Egan, won in 2022 with a time of 3:52.87.

More about the Cesarewitch Trial Day:

The Cesarewitch Trial Day, also known as the Cesarewitch Handicap, is a prestigious event which brings with it an illustrious history and a large crowd for every renewal of the event. The event began all the way back to 1839. The name of the event is in honour of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, after he donated £300 to the Jockey Club.

The event currently takes place at the Rowley Mile, a racecourse located at the famous Newmarket racecourse, which has a great history itself, with horse racing taking place there since 1667. This means that the venue has been hosting horse racing for over 350 years.

The initial location chosen to hold the Cesarewitch ahead of the Cambridgeshire but was reversed. A total of three horses completed the double (Cesarewitch & Cambridgeshire) in the 19th Century: Rosebery (1876), Foxhall (1881) and Plaisanterie (1885).

The most successful horse is Aaim to Prosper with 2 wins in 2010 and 2012. In contrast, the most successful jockey in the event’s history is Doug Smith, who won with Canatrice (1939), French Design (1954), Sandiacre (1957), Come to Daddy (1959), Alcove (1960) and finally with Persion Lancer (1966).

There have been five different winners in the Cesarewitch are as follows: Low Sun (Seamie Heffernan, 2018), Stratum (Jason Watson, 2019), Great White Shark (Jason Watson, 2020), Buzz (Oisin Murphy, 2021) & Run For Oscar (2022).

The 2024 Cesarewitch Trial Day takes place at the Newmarket Racecourse with dates yet to be announced.

Yes, there is a dress code for when you attend the Cesarewitch Trial Day. For the Premier Enclosure, male racegoers should be wearing smart trousers, shirt and smart shoes. Ladies can wear a hat but this is not compulsory. Jeans should not be worn, if they are they need to be dark denim.

For the Grandstand & Paddock and Garden enclosures, sportswear and sleeveless vests should not be worn but smart denim is acceptable (But not frayed or ripped). You are not allowed to wear sports trainers, with fancy dress permitted. All children should be dressed smartly.

There are various facilities on offer for the disabled. Guide dogs are allowed (you will have to produce a valid identification document from Assistance Dogs UK or the international equivalent. There are also accessible toilets available at the following locations: Millennium Grandstand, Premier Courtyard, Paddock Bar area and the Garden Enclosure.

Please note that there are NO accessible toilet facilities available in the Head On Stand located on the Rowley Mile.

Yes, the venue is completely cashless, with there being no cash machines on site.
