British No.1 Heather Watson begins her grass court campaign at the Birmingham Classic later today. She takes on qualifier Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia in her first match at the premier WTA event. The opportunity to see Britain’s best women’s player in action will excite Birmingham Classic hospitality guests.
Watson was due to compete at the Aegon Open Nottingham last week, but was forced to miss the tournament with an elbow injury. She will be hoping to join fellow Brits Naomi Broady and Johanna Konta in the second round, after they both caused memorable wins at the Edgbaston Priory Club on Monday.
Broady, from Stockport, beat Aija Tomjanovic 6-2, 6-4 and faces top seed Simone Halep on the Ann Jones Centre Court on Tuesday afternoon. While Konta notched up an even more emphatic victory over World No.52 Jarmila Gajdosova. Konta has shown some impressive form so far this grass-court season and reached the last eight at the Aegon Open Nottingham.
Another star in action on Tuesday will be two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka, who takes on Vavara Lepchenko in her first round match. There are some mouthwatering clashes for guests enjoying Aegon Classic Birmingham hospitality packages.
