The Ashes 2015 - 1st Test Review

Cricket Hospitality Packages – England hammer Australia in first Ashes Test

England made the perfect start to the 2015 Ashes with a crushing 169-run victory over Australia at the SWALEC Stadium, Cardiff. The series now moves to Lords for the second test, before the third test at Edgbaston. Eventmasters are delighted to offer official cricket hospitality packages for the Fourth Test at Trent Bridge (which begins on August 6th) and KIA Oval (20th August) for the Fifth Test Match.

After a 5-0 whitewash Down Under in 2013, Alastair Cook’s side were desperate for revenge on their bitter rivals. Another century for the sensational Joe Root pulled England out of hole after they slumped to 43-3 on the first morning. His 134 was followed by 52 from the aggressive Ben Stokes and a vital 77 from Moeen Ali as England finished their innings on 430. Australia’s reply started well as Chris Rogers hit 95, before edging to slip.

Steve Smith got himself in only to be caught off the bowling of Ali, and it was the same story for the skipper Michael Clarke who was caught and bowled by Ali. The Aussies then preceded to lose their final 7 wickets for just 101 runs as they were dismissed for 308. More vital runs from Root and Stokes, along with a much needed 60 from Ian Bell saw England to 289 all-out setting the tourists a score of 412 runs to take a 1-0 series lead. Stuart Broad was in inspirational form and dismissed Clarke, Rogers and Smith.

Wickets for Mark Wood and Ali left the Aussies reeling on 106-5. Shane Watson was the next go after falling LBW to the relentless Wood and suddenly England needed just three wickets for a memorable win. But in typical Australian fashion they came back fighting with their backs to the wall. Mitchell Johnson smashed a wonderful 77 which included nine fours and two sixes, but he was quickly running out of partners.

Mitchell Starc was caught off the bowling of the golden boy Joe Root before the Yorkshireman also got the wicket of Johnson. Ali then wrapped up the victory as Hazelwood was caught by Root. England now move onto Lords on Thursday full of confidence, while Australia have just a few days to regroup and reassess.
