Maro Itoje Gets Tackled

England lose Maro Itoje for Autumn Internationals

Eddie Jones has been dealt another major injury blow ahead of the Old Mutual Wealth Autumn Internationals at Twickenham, after superstar forward Maro Itoje was ruled out for six-weeks with a broken hand.

Itoje who was a key figure for England as they claimed their first Six Nations Grand Slam since 2003 and a first ever Test Series win over Australia, was forced from the field in Saracens European Cup game on Saturday.

After undergoing a scan the 21-year-old was ruled out of action and will miss all four of England’s Autumn Internationals, which begin with the visit of South Africa (Saturday 12th November) and end with a vital game against Australia (Saturday 3rd December).

Head Coach Jones already has a long-list of injuries to contend with after losing Jack Nowell, Anthony Watson, James Haskell, George Kruis, Sam Jones and Manu Tuilagi. But the loss of Itoje could be the most significant, given the major impact he has had since bursting onto the international stage.

Mark McCall, Saracens Director of Rugby, said: “For any team to lose a player of the ability of Maro is a blow and he will be missed through the autumn for both Saracens and England.

“What’s now important for Maro is his recovery and we look forward to his return later this season.”
