England’s strength in depth will undergo a severe examination as Eddie Jones prepares for the Old Mutual Wealth Autumn Internationals at Twickenham. This morning the Australian named his 33-man squad denuded of some big names.
Injuries provide uncapped players the chance to shine in the Autumn Internationals
Injured players not considered for selection included Jack Clifford (Harlequins), Luke Cowan-Dickie (Exeter Chiefs), James Haskell (Wasps), Maro Itoje (Saracens), Sam Jones (Wasps), George Kruis (Saracens), Jack Nowell (Exeter Chiefs), Manu Tuilagi (Leicester Tigers), Anthony Watson (Bath Rugby), and Mike Williams (Leicester Tigers).
With the back row in particular looking thin there is a recall for the hard as nails Northampton flanker Tom Wood.
He has effectively been shunned since Jones took over – for no obvious good reason. A bit like the refusal to consider Danny Cipriani despite a host of brilliant performances.
There is sadly no recall for Cipriani. No place either for the uncapped Josh Beaumont. Bad luck for two players in fine form.
The squad takes in uncapped prop Kyle Sinckler though, No 8 Nathan Hughes, lock Charlie Ewels, wing Mike Haley, fly-half Alex Lozowski and centre Ben Te’o. There will be plenty of eyes on how Hughes goes. A destructive ball-carrier, the Fijian has qualified via residency.
Much will depend for England victory hopes on the engine room of Joe Launchbury and Courtney Lawes. At their best they are great players but have on occasion appeared burned out.
Wing Jonny May, No 8 Ben Morgan and second-row Dave Atwood all return from long absences. The squad fly to Portugal for a training camp on Sunday.
The Old Mutual Wealth Series sees England begin their campaign on November 12 against South Africa, before facing Fiji, Argentina and Australia.
“Our training camp in Portugal is a great opportunity to spend a week together, focus on putting our game plans in place and for new players to understand the England way,” said Jones.
