England v Australia: Euro 2016 Warm-up Preview

After a hard fought 2-1 victory over Turkey in their first warm-up fixture, England continue their preparations for Euro 2016 against Australia at the Stadium of Light on Friday evening.

Goals from striking duo Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy sealed the victory at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday evening. Now Roy Hodgson is likely to rotate his line-up and try out new combinations as he searches for his best XI ahead of Euro 2016.

Rashford to make England debut ahead of Euro 2016

Manchester United’s teenage striking sensation Marcus Rashford is likely to win his first England cap; a remarkable rise to the top for the 18-year-old who only made his club debut in February.

While Rashford was named in the 26-man training squad, few expected him to be on the plane to France. However an injury to Daniel Sturridge has left Rashford in pole position to capitalise if he performs well.

Hodgson has confirmed that Rashford will play a “serious role” in the fixture and is confident of his abilities saying, “I’m more than content that Rashford will handle that situation.

“It is a big game for him because I, my coaching staff, the rest of the players, he himself, the whole of the English football world will be looking to say ‘we all think this lad’s got something special… can he show it to us once again?”

The Three Lions manager is also set to give starts to goalkeeper Fraser Forster and defenders Chris Smalling, Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand.

Skipper Wayne Rooney is likely to be rested for the game, while Gary Cahill will miss out with a hip injury. Midfielder Fabian Delph is struggling with an injury which could rule him out of the entire European Championships.

The two sides haven’t met since February 2003, when goals from Tony Popovic, Harry Kewell, and Brett Emerton gave the Socceroos their only victory over England. On that night England used a record 22 players – Roy Hodgson will not be so careless tonight.
