Manchester United against Liverpool is always one of the highest profile fixtures in the land, and it will be no different as the Premier League gets back to business this weekend. But there is added spice for both sides – United are reeling from a disastrous transfer window and Liverpool are hurting after being hammered at Anfield last time out by West Ham.
However, in the event of defeat or victory, expect the critics to be lining up to lambast either Louis Van Gaal or Brendan Rogers. Or maybe both if it fails to inspire.
Perhaps there will even be mutterings about who goes first – football can be a cruel game. Let’s hope it is instead a great game full of goals. Plenty to talk about for guests enjoying the fantastic Manchester United hospitality packages before the kick off at Old Trafford.
Departed stars like Angel di Maria, Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez have been queuing up to have a pop at Van Gaal for the manner of his man-management or lack thereof.
All resulting in the so-called ‘panic’ signing of £36 million Anthony Martial, a 19-year-old with just a handful of goals to his name at Monaco. To top it all England striker legend Alan Shearer has accused van Gaal of adopting “dull and functional” football.
United have failed to convince in the Premier League this season. They won their opening two games – both by a single goal – but were then held to a draw at home to Newcastle and beaten at Swansea. United have scored just three times in the league this season. Critics claim Van Gaal is betraying the United way; that’s exciting attacking football in case you had forgotten.
For Liverpool, Christian Benteke is an injury doubt after being brought off at half-time in Belgium’s win over Cyprus in their Euro 2016 qualifier.
Liverpool are smarting after a bits and pieces start to the season was followed by a dreadful showing against West Ham who ended their 52-year wait for success at Anfield with a 3-0 victory. Liverpool’s improved defending this term went to pot.
They need to get back on track and where better than against their most bitter rivals – the battle of the Reds.
Intriguing games elsewhere too. Chelsea go to Everton in the hope of improving on their ropy start to the season.
Eden Hazard is off form, Diego Costa seems more interested in fighting than goal scoring, they failed to get main target, John Stones, the home side’s England centre half … some say Jose Mourinho has lost the plot. After having a transfer request turned down what will Stones be thinking as he lines up for Everton?
