It was a glorious moment for Irishman Shane Lowry over the weekend as he reigned supreme at the 148th Open at Royal Portrush. The 32-year-old pipped Englishman Tommy Fleetwood to the post to claim the Claret Jug at one of the world’s most prestigious golf tournaments.
Lowry stated that the victory felt as though he was going through an ‘out of body experience’. He’d been solid as rock throughout the tournament but was visibly emotional as his wife and daughter ran across the course to embrace him. He managed to persevere through Sunday’s treacherous conditions to see the competition through to the end.
After Rory McIleroy’s disappointing performance and eventual exit on Friday, supporters placed all their hopes on Lowry. An Irishman winning at Royal Portrush was undoubtedly of monumental significance. Fans were clearly eager for an Irishman to win the competition on Northern Irish soil. As Lowry approached the 16th hole, known as ‘Calamity Corner’, a Northern Irishman shouted ‘you’re doing us proud, Shane!’.
As the finale approached, the supporters were evidently ecstatic by the result. The atmosphere was triumphant, with fans roaring and attempting to dominate the course. Their reaction evidences the intense atmosphere and positive energy that the competition holds and what the tournament truly means to golf fans.
