Royal Ascot’s California Chrome on Track

Guests enjoying Eventmasters superb Royal Ascot hospitality packages could be in for a treat after the owners of California Chrome confirmed the globetrotting star is on course to appear at flat racing’s most famous meeting in June.

The US Horse of the Year and Kentucky Derby winner, was sent off as favourite for Saturdays Emirates Airline Dubai World Cup, but finished second to 14/1 shot Prince Bishop. The four-year-olds trainer Art Sherman said after the race “We are grateful for the opportunity to race at Royal Ascot and hopeful that California Chrome can put up a good show. We are looking forward to the experience.”

California Chrome who has raced just once on turf will be based at Rae Guest’s yard in Newmarket, and could take his place in the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on May 16, before attempting to win the Prince of Wales Stakes at Royal Ascot. Nick Smith, Ascot’s head of communications and international racing, expressed his delight at the prospect of America’s box office attraction running at the royal meeting. “We’re obviously thrilled that this is coming to fruition,” he said. “I first met Art at the Breeders’ Cup last year and then again at Los Alamitos in February and it was a great pleasure to meet the owners Perry Martin and Steve Coburn in Dubai to discuss details.

“To have another Kentucky Derby winner at Royal Ascot is exciting and he could spearhead a strong international presence for the week.”
