The tennis season certainly looks to be hotting up this summer, with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) announcing today that a host of female tennis stars will be joining Britain’s Johanna Konta at some of this year’s showcase tournaments.
Australian Open winner and World No.1, Caroline Wozniacki, 2017 Birmingham Classic champion, Petra Kvitova and Nottingham Open winner, Donna Vekic are among the world’s elite players taking centre stage this summer alongside British No.1 Konta.
Tennis fans will be able to catch their idols courtside at the Nottingham Open, Birmingham Classic and Eastbourne International. This fabulous feast of events forms Britain’s bumper schedule of grass court tournaments in the build-up to the Wimbledon Championships in July.
Recently crowned World No.1, Wozniacki has already voiced her excitement at a return to Devonshire Park’s world-class grass courts ahead of the Eastbourne International (from 22nd-30th June).
The 27-year-old Dane stated:
“I’ve had an exciting start to the year so far, and I’m looking forward to seeing where that takes me in the first half of the season, and during the British summer of tennis.
“I hope to build on my 10-year history at the tournament this summer, and to get the best possible grass court preparation in at the Eastbourne International ahead of Wimbledon.”
Reigning Birmingham Classic champion, Kvitova, has welcomed a return to Edgbaston Priory Club (16th – 24th June), as she looks to fend off some world-class opposition in defence of her title.
The two-time Wimbledon winner said:
“That week in Birmingham was so special for me and I’m very excited to come back. I got amazing support. I always love playing on grass and in the UK so I’m really looking forward to it.”
Nottingham Open victor, Donna Vekic, has also confirmed that she will be joining British No.1 and fellow 2017 Open finalist, Johanna Konta this year. The two provided a fascinating spectacle for viewers to enjoy last year and both will certainly be hoping to reach similar heights in this year’s Nottingham Open.
“I’m so excited to be returning to Nottingham in the summer. It was such an incredible feeling last year to win the event and lift the prestigious Elena Baltacha Trophy in front of a packed centre court crowd.
“I had such a great experience and thoroughly enjoyed my time at the tournament so I’m really looking forward to getting back out on the grass courts and having the chance to defend my title.”
Following a successful summer in 2017, that saw record attendances across the board, fans will be anticipating a similarly enthralling round of fixtures in 2018.
