The York Racecourse Dante Festival 2018: Review

The Dante Festival at York Racecourse opened in its usual spectacular fashion on the 16th May, promising another few days of exciting racing at the Knavesmire.

The storied course wasted no time in getting into the action, with a full complement of races for attendees to enjoy.

The big winner of the day was Harry Angel, ridden by Adam Kirby. The Irish Thoroughbred won the Duke of York Stakes as the 4/9 favourite, further cementing his reputation as one of the best sprinters in the sport today.

Day Two was another stirring day of racing, with a bright, dry day providing optimal racing conditions.

The feature race of the day was the Dante Stakes. Named after the Yorkshire trained winner of the Derby substitute at Newmarket in 1945, and serving as a major trial for the Derby to this day, the 2018 Dante Stakes were won by Roaring Lion in emphatic fashion. The day also saw another win for veteran rider Frankie Detorri, who took the Middleton Stakes, riding Coronet, earlier in the day.


The final day on Friday concluded the Dante Festival with another packed day of racing, including the prestigious Yorkshire Cup. As part of the British Champions Series, its imposing 1 mile 5 furlong and 188 yard course is a test of any stayer, but Stradivarius, ridden by Frankie Detorri, took the win. The clear favourite to win, he saw off other competitors Max Dynamite and Count Octave to take the prize in fine form.
