Australia produced a devastating display of bowling to level the Ashes series at 1-1 ahead of the third test at Edgbaston on July 29th. The fourth test at Trent Bridge now looks to be the pivotal moment of the series, if England can take a 2-1 lead at Edgbaston then the Trent Bridge test could see them lift the famous urn. Eventmasters are delighted to provide official Trent Bridge hospitality packages for the fourth test inside the Sobers Hall.
The Aussies put themselves in a strong position during their first innings, with Chris Rogers and Steve Smith scoring 173 and 215 respectively before Michael Clarke declared on 566-8. The hosts were quickly reduced were 30-4, but skipper Alastair Cook led the England fightback scoring 96 while Ben Stokes contributed a vital 87. But once they were removed the Australian pace bowlers quickly dismissed the tail leaving England on a score of 312, 244 behind Australia.
With such a lead Clarkes side were given licence to go out and play aggressive cricket. David Warner smashed 83, alongside another half century from Smith set England a total of 508 to win. But in reality they were just hoping to see out the remaining five sessions and secure a draw. But a monumental collapse ruined any chance of England salvaging a draw.
The pace and ferocity of the Australian attack spearheaded by Mitchell Johnson was just too much for the England batsmen to handle. The highest scorer of the innings was Stuart Broad who hit a quick-fire 25, but that was as good as it got. Some poor shots combined with the hostile bowling saw England dismissed for a woeful 103.
Now questions are being asked about the top order who have failed to fire. Adam Lyth has looked out of his depth so far this series averaging just 12.5 the second lowest in the whole side. Jonny Bairstow has been scoring centuries for fun in county cricket and has to be under serious consideration for a place in the side.
There are calls for Joe Root to be moved up the order to help counter the Australian attack from the number three position, where Gary Ballance has failed to fire. But one thing is for sure England have to change things ahead of the Edgbaston test or they could be heading to Trent Bridge needing to save the series.
