With the failure of England’s top order in the first two test matches Ian Bell, Adam Lyth and Gary Ballance find their positions under threat. Nottinghamshire pair Alex Hales and James Taylor are both under consideration after showcasing fine form over the summer. Taylor gave the Ashes selectors a timely reminder of his talent as he hit a career high score of 291 yesterday.
After his outstanding innings Taylor said “As far as England is concerned I’d like to think I’ll be talked about again after this innings. I feel I have matured as a player and I know my own game a lot better.” Jonny Bairstow is another player who is knocking very loudly on the door. The Yorkshire star has averaged over 100 this season in the County Championship, his 906 runs have included five centuries and three fifties.
With Ballance struggling to find any form against the fearsome and intimidating Australian bowling attack despite showing his quality for England in the past. Bairstow’s form is surely too good to ignore. At the top of the order Adam Lyth has really struggled for runs and has averaged just 12 runs over the first two test matches.
Alex Hales is an explosive opening batsman and averages 43.07 in the County Championship. It may be harsh to drop Lyth after a handful of test matches but England desperately need runs early in their innings, they can’t afford to be 30-4 again in this series.
Ian Bell is an experience test match performer and has played over 100 games for England. He has produced big scores against Australia in the past. He deserves the chance to return to form at his home ground in the third test. But there has to be changes elsewhere in the batting line-up. Bairstow should come in for Ballance with Joe Root moving up to number three. Alex Hales should also be given a chance to sure up things and open the batting with Alastair Cook.
