Two-time Grand Slam winner, Garbiñe Muguruza begins her Wimbledon title defence with an exciting return to the upcoming Birmingham Classic.
Her impressive semi-finals run at Edgbaston Priory Club in 2017, proved a crucial stepping stone as the scintillating Spaniard went on to lift the trophy at Wimbledon three weeks later.
The 24-year-old, who also won Roland Garros in 2016, joins a star-studded cast at the Birmingham Classic this year, which runs from Saturday 16th – Sunday 24th June. Two-time Wimbledon champion, Petra Kvitova, and Great Britain’s Johanna Konta are among the other household names to feature at the prestigious WTA Premier event in 2018.
The Spaniard, currently ranked 3rd in the WTA Rankings said:
“Winning my first Wimbledon title was so special and I can’t wait to play in front of British crowds again.
“The courts in Birmingham are great and it’s always a very strong line-up of players. It’s a wonderful event that I always enjoy playing.”
The Birmingham Classic is the most illustrious annual women’s sporting event in the Midlands, boasting a total of $871,028 prize money. 10th seed Kvitova is the reigning champion with previous noteworthy winners including Billie Jean King, Li Na and Martina Navratilova.
Patrick Hughesman, Birmingham Classic tournament director, was delighted with the inclusion of Muguruza this year, saying:
“Having the reigning Wimbledon champion join us again in Birmingham is fantastic news. Garbiñe reached the World No.1 ranking in September 2017 and was awarded WTA Player of the Year for 2017 so she is definitely one of the biggest stars of the women’s game right now and we look forward to welcoming her back to the Edgbaston Priory Club.
“With Jo Konta and Petra Kvitova also committed to play and more big names due to enter, our player field is set to be extremely strong this year.”
