After a fantastic Chester May Festival last week, another major flat racing event gets underway today with the Dante Meeting at the North’s premier horse racing venue York, where guests can enjoy York hospitality packages. The three day festival features some excellent contest including the Dante Stakes, a traditional trial for the Epsom Derby.
Duke of York Clipper Logistics Stakes – Group 2 6f
The first group race of the week is the Duke of York Clipper Logistics Stakes, a Group 2 contest run over six furlongs. The highly progressive Muthmir heads the market for William Haggas and Paul Hanagan combination. Last season he landed two big handicaps at Doncaster and York, he looks a group winner in the making and could prove hard to beat, and the drying ground will increase his chances. The 2014 runner-up Astaire is another who holds a brilliant chance as he looks to go one better than last season. The four-year-old performed well on his reappearance at Doncaster, before landing a Group 3 at Newmarket in April, like Muthmir he will appreciate the drying ground. Marco Botti’s Naadirr defeated Astaire in a listed contest in March and is another with a major chance. His 2014 form was high class and he continued that this season, ground wise he is very versatile. Justice Day is a very consistent performer in Pattern races, despite the fact his record reads 0-8 in this company. His run last time out behind Goldream at Newmarket looks very solid form, he stayed on very well that day and a strong pace will suit the David Elsworth trained four-year-old.
A wide-open Group 2 contest where you can make a case for all the runners. Muthmir is sure to win a Pattern contest at some point in his career but today’s ground may not be fast enough for him and the same goes for Astaire. Naadirr is much less ground dependent and has already got the better of Astaire this season, he should be there at the finish along with the highly dependable Justice Day. A fantastic race in store for guests enjoying York hospitality packages.
Musidora Stakes – Group 3 1m2f
The second big contest of the day is the Musidora Stakes, a Group 3 for fillies run over one-mile-two-furlongs. John Gosden who has won two of the last four renewals saddles the hot favourite Star of Seville. After winning her maiden at Doncaster in October, the three-year-old reappeared with a very impressive win in a listed race at Newbury over today’s distance. Together Forever looks to be the main danger to the favourite and is trained by Irish master Aidan O’Brien. She finished 2014 in fine style winning a listed event and then the Group 1 Fillies Mile at Newmarket, seems to go on any ground but may struggle to concede weight to the favourite.
With a select field of just five runners it is hard to look past the first two in the market. There is no doubt that Together Forever brings the best form after her Group 1 win in 2014, but she has to give 4lbs to Star of Seville who looks very progressive. John Gosden’s excellent record in the race has to be taken into consideration and she is rightly the hot favourite. Another thrilling race for guests enjoying York hospitality packages.
