The Final of the Emirates FA Cup

The 2024 FA Cup Final will be played on Saturday 25th May. The kick-off time will soon be confirmed.

After a 2 – 0 victory in the Quarter Finals against Newcastle United, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City came toe to toe with a Chelsea team led by Mauricio Pochettino under the arch at the famous Wembley Stadium in the semi-finals. It was an enthralling end to end affair that saw reigning FA Cup Champions City eventually emerge as 1 – 0 winners after superb late goal for Portugal international forward Bernardo Silva (84′). This confirmed their place in the latest FA Cup Final, where they learned that they would face cross-city rivals Manchester United for the second year in a row.

Talking about Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United, they made it through a tough and entertaining game against rivals Liverpool in the Quarter Finals, where the Red Devils were 4 – 3 winners against their Merseyside counterparts. This set up a semi-final tie with surprise package Coventry City who were victorious against Wolves in the previous round. It was an incredible game between these two clubs – United initially went 3 – 0 up through Scott McTominay (23′), Harry Maguire (45+1′) and Bruno Fernandes (58′).

However, the Sky Blues were able mount a simply fantastic comeback – former Everton forward Ellis Simms pulled a goal back with less than 20 minutes to go before former Aston Villa attacking midfielder Callum O’Hare added a second goal for Coventry less than ten minutes later (79′). There was then drama when Haji Wright equalised for Mark Robins’ side from the penalty spot deep into second half stoppage time (90+5′).

Championship side Coventry did think that they had won it through Victor Torp in the last few seconds of extra time, but this goal was ruled out for a narrow offside. Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United did manage to go on to win 4 – 2 on penalties to book their place in the 2024 FA Cup Final in May.

This is the 143rd season of the FA Cup, and this competition has a rich history which stretches back to the 1871/72 season which saw Wanderers win the inaugural final before winning it for a second time a year later.

The finals between 1873 and 1885 were all hosted at the Kennington Oval, and the first team to win the FA Cup who are still in existence is Blackburn Rovers. During this period, they won it in 1884 and 1885 after beating Scottish side Queen’s Park 2 – 1 and 2 – 0 respectively. Rovers would win it again in 1886 after beating West Brom.

Scottish sides would soon be stopped from taking part in this competition, and Queen’s Park are the only Scottish club to have got to the Final of the English FA Cup.

At this point, if an FA Cup Final resulted in a draw, the game would be replayed. This remained the case until 1999, which is when the Final became just one leg with the tie decided either at extra time or penalties if the game ends level.

Between 1909 and 1922, the FA Cup Final was played a whole host of venues: Crystal Palace, Old Trafford, Bramall Lane, Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge. In this period, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United won it once whilst Aston Villa won it twice (1913 v Sunderland & 1920 v Huddersfield Town).

The original Wembley Stadium would then host its first ever FA Cup Final in 1923, where Bolton emerged as 2 – 0 winners against West Ham United in front of a 126,047 strong crowd.

The last ever final to be played at the original Wembley Stadium was played in the 1999/00 season where Chelsea were 1 – 0 winners against Aston Villa, where future Blues and Villa Manager Roberto Di Matteo scored the only goal of the game late on in the second half (73’).

All finals between 2001 and 2006 were played at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, before the FA Cup Final returned to the English Capital in 2007. The first final at the new Wembley Stadium saw Chelsea beat Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United 1 – 0 thanks to a goal from Didier Drogba in extra time (116’).

Chelsea are the club who have won the FA Cup the most times at the new Wembley with 5. These wins under the arch came in: 2007 (v Manchester United), 2009 (v Everton), 2010 (v Portsmouth), 2012 (v Liverpool) and 2018 (v Manchester United).

Despite this, it is Arsenal who have won the FA Cup the most with no less than 14 as of the time of writing. The Gunners’ first ever win in this competition came in a 2 – 0 win against Huddersfield Town at the old Wembley Stadium in the 1929/30 season.

Their 13 other FA Cup triumphs came in: 1936 (v Sheffield United), 1950 (v Liverpool), 1971 (v Liverpool), 1979 (v Manchester United), 1993 (v Sheffield Wednesday), 1998 (v Newcastle United), 2002 (v Chelsea), 2003 (v Southampton), 2005 (v Manchester United), 2014 (v Hull City) 2015 (v Aston Villa), 2017 (v Chelsea) and 2020 (v Chelsea).

There have been 8 different winners of the FA Cup in the last 10 years with Arsenal and Manchester City being the only clubs to win it more than once in that time. The Cityzens are the current holders of this competition after they were 2 – 1 winners in a Manchester Derby Final against Manchester United at Wembley in 2023. Ilkay Gündoğan (1’, 51’) scored both goals for Pep Guardiola’s side, while it was Bruno Fernandes who got the Red Devils’ only goal of the game in the first half from the penalty spot (33’).

The winners of the last 10 FA Cup Finals are as follows: Arsenal (2014), Arsenal (2015), Manchester United (2016), Arsenal (2017), Chelsea (2018), Manchester City (2019), Arsenal (2020), Leicester City (2021), Liverpool (2022) & Manchester City (2023).

All rounds are played over one leg, however, there will be a replay all the way up until the semi-final and final, where ties are decided on either extra time or penalties if the game finishes level after 90 minutes.
