FA Cup Final Manchester Derby

2024 FA Cup Final Preview

For the second year in succession, cross-city rivals Manchester City and Manchester United are set to compete for glory in the FA Cup Final at Wembley on Saturday.

The FA Cup Final is one of the biggest days on the English Football League calendar every season, and the 2024 Final is now different. Anticipation and excitement are growing ahead of what is set to be the second final in as many years to see Manchester rivals Manchester City and Manchester United go toe to toe to win this historic and highly prestigious trophy.

Pep Guardiola’s City and Erik Ten Hag’s United are set to go face to face at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 25th May 2024 in what is set to be a 3pm kick-off. The reason why the game is set to get underway at this time for the second year in a row is because of safety reasons and to make journeys to and from the ground easier for fans.

Rewind back to May 2023, and this saw the first-ever final to be a Manchester Derby, and it was a 2 – 1 victory for the Blue side of the city under the stewardship of Pep Guardiola. Two goals from Ilkay Gundogan sealed the victory for the Cityzens (1’, 51’), whilst it was United’s Portuguese midfield maestro who scored the only goal of the game for Erik Ten Hag’s Red Devils.

Moving on to team news, we will start with Manchester United. Ten Hag has recently revealed that they will be without Harry Maguire due to injury, whilst Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia remain unavailable for action. In better news, Victor Lindelof, Mason Mount, and Anthony Martial all look set to return to the matchday squad for the final this Saturday.

As for Guardiola’s City side, their injury news sees Goalkeeper Ederson remain unavailable due to the facial injury that he suffered in their 2 – 0 victory against Spurs in their penultimate game of the 2023/24 Premier League season. Stefan Ortega will, as a result, start the Final against United as a result.

Other than that, the Cityzens have no other injury concerns ahead of this year’s FA Cup Final at Wembley.

Manchester City and Manchester United have gone toe to toe in competitive matches a total of 192 times over the years, and it is United who has won this fixture the most times in all competitions with 78 wins compared to 61 for City. There have been 53 draws in all between them as of the time of writing.

Both clubs have experienced a tremendous amount of success in the FA Cup over the years. Starting with Manchester City, they are, of course, the defending Champions following their 2023 win. This was the club’s seventh final victory in this competition, with other six taking place in 1903/04 (1 – 0 vs. Bolton Wanderers), 1933/34 (2 – 1 vs. Portsmouth), 1955/56 (3 – 1 vs. Birmingham City), 1968/69 (1 – 0 vs. Leicester City), 2010/11 (1 – 0 vs. Stoke City) and in 2018/19 (6 – 0 vs. Watford).

As for Manchester United, they have won the FA Cup on 12 occasions, and most recently in the 2015/16 season when they were 2 – 1 winners against Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium. The Eagles took the lead through Jason Puncheon (78’) before the Red Devils won it thanks to goals from Juan Mata (81’) and Jesse Lingard, who scored the winning goal in extra time (110’).

The other 11 wins for the Red Devils came in 1908/09 (1 – 0 vs. Bristol City), 1947/48 (4 – 2 vs. Blackpool), 1962/63 (3 – 1 vs. Leicester City), 1976/77 (2 – 1 vs. Liverpool), 1982/83 (4 – 0 vs. Brighton – Replay), 1984/85 (1 – 0 vs. Everton), 1989/90 (1 – 0 vs. Crystal Palace – Replay), 1993/94 (4 – 0 vs. Chelsea), 1995/96 (1 – 0 vs. Liverpool), 1998/99 (2 – 0 vs. Newcastle United) and in 2003/04 (3 – 0 vs. Millwall).

Excitement and anticipation are growing ahead of what is set to be a second consecutive FA Cup Final that will see a Manchester Derby being played at the iconic Wembley Stadium. Fans await to see who will not only be adding to their trophy cabinet, but also who will be gaining the bragging rights over their rivals until the two rival clubs meet once again in the 2024/25 Premier League season.
