5 Key Premier League Games this weekend

Fans of the Premier League are in for an enthralling weekend of action, with teams battling each other to get closer to achieving their objectives for the season.

Fans up and down the country and around the world have been anticipating the return of Premier League football following the conclusion of the most recent international break. There is bound to be enthralling action, talking points and perhaps some surprise results this weekend, and it will be exciting to find out what will happen.

No less than 10 Premier League matches are taking place this weekend and into Monday. And, whilst all matches have a strong chance of being enthralling, there are certain games that will catch the eye of fans more than others, and the battle for the title and the fight to avoid the dreaded drop will now resume.

Here, we will look at five Premier League matches you should be looking out for this weekend, starting with a mouth-watering clash between reigning Champions Manchester City and Liverpool.

The Reds are one of several clubs looking to stop Pep Guardiola’s Cityzens from clinching a record breaking and historic fourth consecutive league title.

Saturday 25th: Manchester City (1st) vs. Liverpool (2nd) – Etihad Stadium, 12:30 Kick-Off

We begin with City welcoming Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool to the Etihad Stadium in the early kick-off on Saturday. As mentioned, Manchester City are reigning champions and are on course to win it again, as they are sat at the summit of the table with 28 points. The visiting Reds are only a point behind them in second place.

If Pep Guardiola’s side wins this game, they could extend their gap at the top of the league to four points depending on results elsewhere, but at the very least, they would remain in first place. As for Liverpool, they will leapfrog City to first place if they come away with a crucial win in Manchester.

Saturday 25th: Sheffield United (18th) vs. AFC Bournemouth (16th) – Bramall Lane, 15:00 Kick-Off

Now we go from the top of the Premier League to the bottom end of it for the next match, which could prove crucial to the futures of Sheffield United and AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League. The Cherries are in the more comfortable position, 16th – but they are just 4 above the bottom three. As for the Blades, they are 18th and only a point from safety.

If Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth picks up the win, they could go level on points with Fulham in 15th place if Fulham lose their match against Wolves. At the very least, Marco Silva’s side will extend their gap to the relegation zone to 7 points.

Should Paul Heckingbottom’s team win, they will climb out of the relegation zone if Luton Town lose or draw their game against Crystal Palace at Kenilworth Road.

Saturday 25th: Newcastle United (7th) vs. Chelsea (10th) – St. James’ Park, 15:00 Kick-Off

We now move on to two clubs amongst the teams with their sights set on European qualification in the league this season. Eddie Howe’s Magpies are closer to achieving this goal with them sitting in 7th place with 20 points, and they are just a point off Manchester United in 6th place.

As for Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea, they are sat 10th with 16 points accumulated from their 12 matches.

This is a crucial game for enhancing hopes of European qualification come the end of the 2023/24 Premier League season. If Newcastle win, they could leapfrog Manchester United into 6th and be within 2 points off 5th place Aston Villa should results go their way. If Chelsea win, they could be within just a point of the European places if results elsewhere go in their favour.

Sunday 26th: Spurs (4th) vs. Aston Villa (5th) – Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, 14:00 Kick-Off

Looking a little higher in the table now, we have Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham welcoming Unai Emery’s Aston Villa to North London in another battle for Europe and potentially an early battle in the race for Champions League football. Spurs have got off to a fantastic start and sit fourth with 26 points, whilst Villa have also had a tremendous start to their 2023/24 Premier League season, which sees them in 5th place with 25 points, just one behind Tottenham Hotspur and with a superior goal difference.

Should Spurs take all three points, they will make their spot in the top four certain for another week, and they could return to the top of the Premier League table should Manchester City and Liverpool draw and Arsenal lose or draw away from home against Brentford. As for Villa, they will enter the top four with victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Monday 27th: Fulham (15th) vs. Wolves (12th) – Craven Cottage, 20:00 Kick-Off

The final key game we will look at here is the clash between Marco Silva’s Fulham and Gary O’Neil’s Wolverhampton Wanderers at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon. The Cottagers need the points more because they are closer to the drop zone in 15th place than Wolves, who are a bit more comfortable in 12th with 15 points to their name.

Their meeting in West London will be vitally important for both sides early in the season. If Nottingham Forest draw or lose against high-flying Brighton at the City Ground, a Fulham win would see them rise to 14th rather than a couple of places higher due to goal difference. As for Wolves, they would have the chance to climb to as high as 9th place with all three points and results elsewhere in favour of the West Midlands club.

Excitement for the return of the Premier League is growing, and the results from this weekend of action will see if some clubs can carry on their excellent form pre-international break, whilst others will want to turn their form around, starting with the first game after the November internationals.
