Aston Villa May 2024

Aston Villa v Liverpool Match Preview

Qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League is within touching distance for Unai Emery’s Aston Villa, and a win against Liverpool on Monday will seal fourth place for the Villans.

There are only two games left in the 2023/24 Premier League season for Unai Emery’s Aston Villa, and one of them will be against Liverpool, who they will play at Villa Park on Monday 13th May 2024 in what is set to be an 8pm Kick Off in B6. Three points would be pivotal to Villa’s chances of securing qualification for the highly prestigious UEFA Champions League for next season.

If the Villans do indeed collect all three points, this would make them mathematically certain of a top four finish, meaning that they would guarantee Champions League football for the 2024/25 campaign.

This is because, as it stands, Villa holds a seven point lead on 5th place Spurs, albeit with there being a game in hand for Ange Postecoglou’s side. Three points for Villa would mean that if Tottenham draw, there will be an insurmountable 9 point gap, and even more so if Villa wins and Spurs lose, as this would generate a 10 point gap between them.

If both win, Villa will maintain a 7 point lead, a tally that their North London counterparts would still find impossible to match or surpass, as there will only be 6 points for Spurs to play for after this weekend.

Aston Villa could still secure Champions League Football and a top four finish if they lose. This relies on Spurs losing their game against Burnley at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday.

Monday’s game against Liverpool comes straight after Villa’s UEFA Europa Conference League Semi-Final second leg clash with Olympiacos in Piraeus, Greece. This match and the one against the Reds at Villa Park just a few days later are crucial in deciding the club’s ultimate fate for the 2023/24 season.

As things stand, Aston Villa find themselves in 4th place after accumulating a total of 67 points from their 36 matches so far. As for Liverpool, they sit just a place above their Birmingham counterparts in 3rd place with a points total of 78. Klopp’s title challengers are 9 points above Villa at the moment.

The most recent Premier League contest between these two clubs took place early on in the current season at Anfield on 3rd September 2023. It was a game that the Reds won 3 – 0 thanks to goals from Dominik Szoboszlai (3’), Mohamed Salah (55’), and an own goal from Villa right back Matty Cash (22’).

Aston Villa’s most recent victory in the Premier League against their Merseyside counterparts came at Villa Park on 4th October 2020. It was a record breaking 7 – 2 win for a Villa side led by then-Head Coach Dean Smith. Ollie Watkins got a hattrick (4’, 22’, 39’), whilst there were also goals for John McGinn (35’), Ross Barkley (55’) and Jack Grealish (66’, 75’).

The Reds have been unbeaten against Emery’s side since then, but the Villa will, of course, want to end this run that Liverpool are on against them and secure a crucial and season defining victory in B6 against Jurgen Klopp’s team on Monday 13th May 2024.

Overall, Aston Villa and Liverpool have come face to face a total of 202 times competitively in all competitions over the years. This includes the first-ever fixture between them that took place in the league on 8th September 1894 at Anfield. Villa won this game 2 – 1, courtesy of goals from Stephen Smith and Bob Chatt. Harry Bradshaw was the sole goal scorer for the Reds that day.

It is Liverpool with a superior total of 102 wins compared to Aston Villa’s 59 in all. There have been a total of 41 draws played out between these two clubs over the years to date.

All eyes will be on Villa in B6 on Monday evening as they look to mathematically secure their place in next season’s UEFA Champions League. Kick-Off is at 20:00 at Villa Park on Monday 13th May 2024.

After this game, Unai Emery’s Aston Villa will only have one more Premier League game to go in the current campaign, with their incredible season ending with a trip to an in-form Crystal Palace in a 16:00 kick-off on the final day, which is set to be on Sunday 19th May 2024.
