Carabao Cup Quarter Final Draw
Following the enthralling action from the fourth round of the league cup, the draw for the Quarter Finals has been made.
We are getting closer to finding out the winner of this season’s Carabao Cup, and eight fourth-round ties took place over the course of Tuesday and Wednesday evening earlier this week. There will be extra incentive to win the competition, not just because of its prestige but also because the winners will secure qualification for the UEFA Europa Conference League Play-Off Round.
Two ties took place on Tuesday, with League One club Exeter City facing Middlesbrough of the Championship at St James’ Park. The Grecians put up a great fight, only narrowly losing 3 – 2 against their more illustrious opponents. Mansfield Town’s match with Port Vale was the other Carabao Cup match to take place on Tuesday, and it saw Port Vale win the game 1 – 0 thanks to a goal from Tottenham Hotspur loanee Alfie Devine (50’).
A further six League Cup Fourth Round games were played on Wednesday evening. In a London Derby between West Ham United and Arsenal, it was David Moyes’ Hammers who triumphed 3 – 1 after goals from summer signing Mohamed Kudus (50’), Jarrod Bowen (60’) and an own goal from Gunners defender Ben White (16’). Martin Odegaard scored Arsenal’s only goal of the game (90+6’).
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool made the trip to the South Coast to face AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium in the fourth round of this season’s competition. This an intense contest, but it was the Reds who triumphed 2 – 1 in the end, with Cody Gakpo (31’) and Darwin Nunez (70’) finding the back of the Cherries’ net. Justin Kluivert scored Bournemouth’s only goal (64’).
Chelsea were pre-match favourites when they welcomed Championship club and former Premier League Champions Blackburn Rovers to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening. Central defender Benoit Badiashile (30’) opened the scoring before England international Raheem Sterling (59’) doubled the Blues’ advantage in a comfortable 2 – 0 victory.
Sean Dyche’s Everton were even more comfortable, with the ex-Burnley boss leading the Toffees to a 3 – 0 win against the Clarets at Goodison Park. James Tarkowski (13’), Amadou Onana (53’) and Ashley Young (90+2’) were all on the scoresheet on Wednesday night for the home side.
High-flying Ipswich Town, who find themselves second in the Championship at the time of writing after promotion last term, welcomed Fulham to Portman Road in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
Finally, 2022 finalists Manchester United and Newcastle United came face to face at Old Trafford. Eddie Howe’s Magpies managed to get revenge on the Red Devils by securing an emphatic 3 – 0 victory against them on the night. Miguel Almiron (28’), Chelsea loanee Lewis Hall (36’), and Joe Willock (60′) were Newcastle’s goal scorers.
After the final whistle went at Old Trafford, the draw for the Quarter Finals of the 2023/24 Carabao Cup was made, and the ties are as follows (These matches are set to be played in the week commencing 18th December 2023.):
