Carabao Cup Quarter Final Preview

The next round of the Carabao Cup gets underway next week, and here we look ahead at the four matches to come.

The 63rd Carabao Cup competition is well underway, with the four quarter final ties taking place up and down the country on Tuesday, 19th, and Wednesday, 20th December 2023. One tie involves a club from League One going head to head with a team from the second tier. The other three ties are between Premier League sides.

Before we look at all four of these Carabao Cup Quarter Final ties, let’s look at the fantastic history of the League Cup. This competition was established in the 1960/61 season, and the very first winners were Aston Villa, who were 3 – 2 winners on aggregate against Rotherham United. The first leg ended in a 2 – 0 win for Rotherham at their old home, Millmoor, before the Millers lost 3 – 0 at the hands of the Villans at Villa Park in the second leg.

Initially, all of the League Cup Finals were played over two legs. This was until the 1966/67 season when the final was played as a single match. The 1967 final, which saw Queens Park Rangers beat West Bromwich Albion 3 – 2, was the first League Cup final to be played at the iconic Wembley Stadium in front of a 97,952 strong crowd.

Fast forward to 2023, and the most recent winner of the League Cup is Manchester United. Erik Ten Hag’s Red Devils were 2 – 0 winners against a Newcastle United side led by Magpies Head Coach Eddie Howe. Casemiro and Marcus Rashford scored the goals for United that day.

The club that currently has the honour of winning this competition the most over the years is Liverpool, who have won 9 (1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1995, 2001, 2003, 2012 & 2012). They are followed by Manchester City (8), Manchester United (6), Aston Villa (5), Chelsea (5), Spurs (4) and Nottingham Forest (4).

Now, let’s move on to the four Carabao Cup Finals that are set to get underway next week. They are as follows:

Everton v Fulham

Everton and Fulham will be going head to head at Goodison Park in the Carabao Cup Quarter Final. Both clubs have been in good form lately, and it will be an enthralling and tense match on the blue side of Stanley Park.

Overall, Everton and Fulham have played against each other on 68 occasions. The Toffees have a superior record of 31 wins compared to the Cottagers’ 23. There have been 14 draws in total at the time of writing.

Port Vale v Middlesbrough

There is a potential ‘cupset’ on the cards here between League One Port Vale and the Championship’s Middlesbrough at Vale Park. It will be a challenging game for both sides, and there is a strong sense of intrigue around who will come out on top and book themselves a place in the Carabao Cup Semi-Finals.

Overall, Port Vale and Middlesbrough have played against each other 33 times in all competitions. Boro has the superior record of 17 wins as opposed to Port Vale’s 10. There have been 6 draws between them to date.

Chelsea v Newcastle United

It promises to be a fascinating game with plenty at stake, with both clubs seeking to add silverware to their collection this season.

Chelsea and Newcastle have met on 174 occasions in all competitions over the years. The Blues have 78 wins compared with the Magpies’ 56. The two Premier League heavyweights have drawn 40 times over the years.

Liverpool v West Ham United

The final Carabao Cup Quarter Final tie to take place next week will be Liverpool against West Ham. The two Premier League clubs come face to face at Anfield on Wednesday, 20th December 2023, with the game kicking off at 20:00.
