England Squad Announced

Three Lions Head Coach Gareth Southgate has announced his squad for the friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.

Following this weekend’s Premier League action, international football is set to return next week. On Thursday afternoon, England Manager Gareth Southgate announced in a press conference his 25 man squad to take on Brazil and Belgium in friendlies.

Brazil come first, with the Three Lions taking on the five time World Cup winners under the arch at the iconic Wembley Stadium on Saturday 23rd March in a game that will be kicking off at 19:00 that evening. As for the game against Belgium, this friendly is also going to take place at Wembley on Tuesday, 26th March 2024, in a 19:45 kick-off. Money will be raised for Alzheimer’s Society International in the friendly against Belgium.

Over the years, England and Brazil have come face to face a total of 26 times over the years, with England winning the first ever meeting on 9th May 1956, where the Three Lions won a friendly 4 – 2 at the old Wembley. Overall, Brazil have the superior record of 11 wins in this fixture in comparison to England’s 4. There have been 4 draws between them as well.

As for their record against Belgium, the Three Lions have faced them on 25 occasions. England won their first meeting in a friendly 2 – 0 away from home on 21st May 1921. Overall, England have the superior record of 16 wins in comparison to Belgium’s 5. There have also been just 4 draws between them to date.

In terms of the squad itself, there are first senior call-ups for Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon. The likes of Ivan Toney, Ben Chilwell, John Stones and Ollie Watkins all return to the Three Lions squad for these two friendlies.

Below is the England 25 man squad in full that will be facing both Brazil and Belgium in international friendlies at Wembley Stadium.

Goalkeepers: Sam Johnstone (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal).

Defenders: Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton), Ben Chilwell (Chelsea), Lewis Dunk (Brighton & Hove Albion), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), John Stones (Manchester City) and Kyle Walker (Manchester City).

Midfielders: Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Conor Gallagher (Chelsea), Jordan Henderson (Ajax), James Maddison (Tottenham Hotspur) and Declan Rice (Arsenal).

Forwards: Jarrod Bowen (West Ham United), Phil Foden (Manchester City), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle United), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Ivan Toney (Brentford) and Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa).

Excitement and anticipation are building ahead of these international friendlies for England, with the Three Lions heading closer to the 2024 European Championships that gets underway in Munich on Friday, 14th June 2024.

These two friendlies will give Gareth Southgate the chance to further assess his squad as he gets closer and closer to naming his 25 man squad that will be heading to Germany later in the year.
