FA Cup Semi-Finals Preview

The FA Cup Semi-Finals are set to take place under that famous arch at Wembley Stadium this weekend.

We are now entering the closing stages of the 2023/24 FA Cup with the semi-finals of this season’s competition getting underway at Wembley Stadium over the course of the coming weekend. Excitement and anticipation are now growing rapidly amongst fans and neutrals alike with one match taking place on Saturday 20th April with the other being played on Sunday 21st April.

Two heavyweights of the Premier League are set to go head to head on Saturday evening when Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City goes toe to toe with Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea in a 17:15 kick-off. On the following day, surprise package Coventry City will be taking on a Manchester United side led by Erik Ten Hag in the English Capital.

All four of these clubs have lifted this prestigious trophy on at least one occasion. Starting with FA Cup Holders Manchester City, they have won it on 7 occasions. Aside from their latest win in 2022/23 (2 – 1 vs. Manchester United), their other six triumphs have come in 1903/04 (1 – 0 vs. Bolton Wanderers), 1933/34 (2 – 1 vs. Portsmouth), 1955/56 (3 – 1 vs. Birmingham City), 1968/69 (1 – 0 vs. Leicester City), 2010/11 (1 – 0 vs. Stoke City) and 2018/19 (6 – 0 vs. Watford).

Moving across the city to their rivals Manchester United, the Red Devils have so far won this trophy a total of 12 times, with their most recent triumph being a 2 – 1 win against Crystal Palace in the 2015/16 season. Their other 11 wins came in 1908/09 (1 – 0 vs. Bristol City), 1947/48 (4 – 2 vs. Blackpool), 1962/63 (3 – 1 vs. Leicester City), 1976/77 (2 – 1 vs. Liverpool), 1982/83 (4 – 0 vs. Brighton – via a Replay), 1984/85 (1 – 0 vs. Everton), 1989/90 (1 – 0 vs. Crystal Palace – via a Replay), 1993/94 (4 – 0 vs. Chelsea), 1995/96 (1 – 0 vs. Liverpool), 1998/99 (2 – 0 vs. Newcastle United) and in 2003/04 (3 – 0 vs. Millwall).

As for Chelsea, they have triumphed in an FA Cup Final a total of 8 times, most recently winning this trophy following a 1 – 0 win against Manchester United in the 2017/18 season. Their seven previous triumphs came in 1969/70 (2 – 1 vs. Leeds United, at Extra Time in a replay), 1996/97 (2 – 0 vs. Middlesbrough), 1999/00 (1 – 0 vs. Aston Villa), 2006/07 (1 – 0 vs. Manchester United, after Extra Time), 2008/09 (2 – 1 vs. Everton), 2009/10 (1 – 0 vs. Portsmouth) and 2011/12 (2 – 1 vs. Liverpool).

Finally, Coventry City have won this trophy on one occasion as of the time of writing, and this came back in the 1986/87 season when an own goal from Gary Mabbutt (96’) and goals from David Bennett (9’) and Keith Houchen (64’) earned the Sky Blues a 3 – 2 win over Tottenham Hotspur after extra time. It was Clive Allen (2’) and Gary Mabbutt (40’) who scored for Spurs that day.

As of the time of writing, Manchester City and Chelsea have faced each other a total of 8 times. They first met in the third round of the 1914/15 edition of this competition, and it was Chelsea who won 2 – 1 at Hyde Road, City’s former ground. Overall, it is City with the most wins with 5 compared to 3 for the Blues.

Moving on to the tie between Championship promotion chasers Coventry City and Premier League heavyweights Manchester United at Wembley, they have met in the FA Cup a total of 6 times over the years. It is United who won their first-ever encounter in this competition on 3rd February 1912 where goals from Enoch West, Harold Halse (2), George Wall, and Sandy Turnbull secured a 5 – 1 win for the Red Devils with Fred Jones scoring Covntry’s only goal in that 2nd Round tie. Overall, it is Manchester United with 4 wins with the other two being a draw and a 1 – 0 Coventry City win over their Manchester counterparts on 31st January 1987 at Old Trafford in what was that year’s 4th round.
