2024 FA Cup Wembley

FA Cup Semi Finals Review

It is set to be a second successive Manchester Derby when the two clubs come face to face at Wembley in the 2024 FA Cup Final on 25th May.

An enthralling weekend of FA Cup action has now come to a close, and we now know the identities of the two teams that are set to go head to head in the 2024 FA Cup Final at the famous Wembley Stadium on Saturday 25th May 2024. The winner will add their name to the history books of this illustrious competition.

After two competitive matches, there will be a second consecutive Manchester Derby in the Final when Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City go toe to toe with their cross-city rivals Manchester United under the arch, just as they did in 2023 when goals from Ilkay Gundogan secured a 2 – 1 victory for the Cityzens. The Germany international scored one in each half (1’, 51’), whilst United did get a goal halfway through the opening period through a Bruno Fernandes penalty kick (33’).

This is just the second time in the 153-year history of what is the oldest domestic cup competition that the same two teams have met in successive FA Cup Finals. This is also going to be just the second-ever Manchester Derby Final. The only previous occasions that the same teams competed for this trophy in successive years was in 1884 and 1885 between Blackburn Rovers and Scotland’s Queen’s Park. Rovers won 2 – 1 and 2 – 0 respectively.

The way in which both of these teams found themselves as the winners of their respective semi-finals was far from straightforward. Starting with City, they were involved in an end-to-end game with Chelsea in which the Cityzens won the game 1 – 0 through a goal from Bernardo Silva late on in the second half (84’). Pochettino’s Blues did have plenty of chances, and they did end up with more shots on target with 5 compared to City’s 3.

There was drama in that semi-final, but there was even more in the tie involving Championship side Coventry City and serial FA Cup winners Manchester United on Sunday at Wembley Stadium. Scott McTominay gave the Red Devils a deserved 1 – 0 lead with barely more than 20 minutes gone before central defender Harry Maguire doubled their advantage with a superb header in first-half stoppage time (58’).

Then, early on in the second half, it did seem as if Bruno Fernandes had just put the game beyond all doubt when he scored to make it 3 – 0 (58’). Former Everton forward then got what seemed at the time to be a consolation goal (71’), but just a few minutes later ex-Aston Villa creative midfielder Callum O’Hare made it 3 – 2 with barely more than 10 minutes remaining in normal time (79’).

There was incredible drama when Haji Wright then equalised for Mark Robins’ Sky Blues in the last moments of stoppage time in the second half. No goals then arrived in extra time, but Victor Torp had thought that he had won it for Coventry in the last seconds of the game, but his goal was ruled out for what was a tight offside.

Manchester United went on to finally secure their place in the 2024 FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium thanks to a 4 – 2 win on penalties.

Blackburn Rovers’ Sammie Szmodics and Coventry City’s Ellis Simms are the current joint top goalscorers in this season’s FA Cup with 6 each. However, Manchester City’s leading scorer this term in the form of Erling Haaland is just behind them with 5 goals to his name, joint second with Brighton’s Joao Pedro. The Norwegian forward of course has the chance to collect the 2023/24 FA Cup Golden Boot in the final.

Manchester United’s leading goal scorer in the FA Cup this term is currently Bruno Fernandes with 3 so far. The Portuguese creative midfielder is level with international teammate Bernardo Silva who has the same number of goals for rivals City in this competition so far this season.

Excitement and anticipation are now building rapidly ahead of the 2024 FA Cup Final that is set to take place at the legendary and historic Wembley Stadium on Saturday 25th May 2024 in the English Capital.
