Premier League Finale

Premier League: Final Day Preview

The 2023/24 season is nearing its conclusion, and we are still in for one final round of enthralling action in the Premier League.

The final round of matches in the 2023/24 Premier League season is rapidly approaching with a total of 10 fixtures taking place involving all 20 teams. All of these matches will be kicking off at 16:00 on Sunday 19th May 2024. There are still several permutations, with the fates of some clubs still up in the air.

Here, we are going to take a look at all of the fixtures to come this weekend. But before that, we are going to examine the permutations from the very top of the Premier League table to the very bottom.

We begin with the title race, which is now down to just a two horse race between reigning Champions Manchester City and challengers Arsenal. Pep Guardiola’s Cityzens are top of the table as it stands after accumulating no less than 88 points from their 37 matches to date. They are looking to make history by becoming the very first club in the entire history of English Football to win four top flight titles in a row.

Two points behind them are Mikel Arteta’s Gunners on 86 points. If the North London outfit wins, they will have to hope that City draw or lose their game in order to get their hands on the title. However, if these two teams produce the same result, then Manchester City will of course be the Champions.

The rest of the top four is now secure,  but the final three European places are yet to be decided. Spurs currently occupy fifth, and a win will secure the UEFA Europa League Football. They could still be caught by Chelsea in 6th should they win and Tottenham lose. 7th place Newcastle could climb into 6th if they win and Mauricio Pochettino’s Blues lose.

Brighton, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Wolves, and Fulham occupy places between 10th and 14th respectively, and this area of the table could reshuffle considerably depending on how many of these sides collect all three points.

Everton and Brentford are mathematically safe in 15th and 16th place respectively. Whilst Nottingham Forest in 17th are not mathematically safe with just three points separating them and Luton in 18th. However, with goal differences of -19 and -31 respectively, it is very unlikely that the Reds and the Hatters will be swapping places on the final day on Sunday.

Now that we have taken a look at the permutations, let’s now preview all 10 fixtures that are set to take place on Sunday 19th May 2024, starting with Arsenal’s game against Everton at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal (2nd) vs. Everton (15th)

As mentioned earlier, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are two points behind league leaders and Premier League title rivals Manchester City and will have to hope that West Ham avoid defeat at the Etihad whilst making sure they earn all three points against Sean Dyche’s Toffees side.

Earlier in the season, the Gunners were 1 – 0 winners at Goodison Park thanks to a crucial winning goal from Leandro Trossard midway through the second half (69’).

Over the years, Arsenal and Everton have gone toe to toe on a total of 222 occasions in all competitions over the years, and it is the Gunners who have the most wins to date with no less than 111 wins as of the time of writing compared to 65 for the Toffees. There have been 46 draws between the sides from North London and Merseyside so far.

Manchester City (1st) vs. West Ham United (9th)

We will now move on to the only other club in the race for the 2023/24 Premier League title, and they currently sit at the summit with a two point cushion on Arsenal, knowing that a victory against David Moyes’ West Ham United will be enough to earn them an unprecedented fourth consecutive English Top Flight title.

These two clubs last came face to face at the Hammers’ London Stadium home earlier in the current campaign, and it was a comfortable victory for Pep Guardiola’s side who won 3 – 1 in September 2023. Goals from Jeremy Doku (46’), Bernardo Silva (76’), and Erling Haaland (86’) sealed the win for the Cityzens. All of these goals came after the home side had initially taken the lead thanks to summer signing James Ward-Prowse (36’).

Overall, Manchester City and West Ham United have met on 120 occasions across all competitions over the years. It is the Cityzens who have the most wins with a total of 63 compared to 38 for their London counterparts. There have been just 19 draws between them.

Sheffield United (20th) vs. Spurs (5th)

After missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification against Manchester City earlier in the week, Ange Postecoglou’s side will be looking to confirm their place in next season’s UEFA Europa League and 5thplace in the 2023/24 Premier League table. The Lilywhites will be looking to successfully come away with a win against bottom of the league Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

These two teams last faced each other at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 16th September, where goals from Richarlison (90+8’) and Dejan Kulusevski (90+10’) completed an extraordinarily late comeback against the Blades. The away side had taken the lead thanks to a goal from Dutch midfielder Gustavo Hamer with less than twenty minutes to go in the game (73’).

Sheffield United and Spurs have played against each other a total of 96 times so far over the years. It is Tottenham with the most wins with a total of 39 compared to the Blades’ 30. There have been 27 draws between them in total.

Brentford (16th) vs. Newcastle United (7th)

Next up in this preview is Brentford’s game against Newcastle United at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday. Thomas Frank’s Bees are mathematically safe, whilst Eddie Howe and Newcastle United will be looking to confirm European Qualification for next season with a win.

These two sides last played each other at St. James’s Park back on the 16th September 2023, where the Magpies were 1 – 0 winners through a winning goal from Callum Wilson, who successfully scored after finding the back of Thomas Strakosha’s net from the penalty spot with just under half an hour remaining (64’).

Overall, these two clubs have met on just 17 occasions over the years. It is Newcastle United with the most wins with 12 compared to Brentford’s 4. These two sides have drawn just once in all competitions against each other.

Chelsea (6th) vs. AFC Bournemouth (11th)

Next up is the fixture between Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea and Andoni Iraola’s AFC Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on Sunday 19th May 2024. The Blues know that a win will secure them UEFA Europa League football for next season, and they could take 5th if they beat the Cherries and if Tottenham lose against Sheffield United.

The first fixture of the season between these two took place at the Vitality Stadium on the South Coast back on 17th September, where they drew 0 – 0.

Overall, Chelsea and AFC Bournemouth have faced each other a total of only 20 times over the years in all competitions. It is the Blues with the most wins with 13 compared to 5 in all for the Cherries, whilst there have been just 2 draws between them so far.

Brighton (10th) vs. Manchester United (8th)

Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United are another side that have a realistic chance of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Europa League on the final day. The Red Devils are currently in 8th, and if they win, they will be able to climb as high as 6th if other results go their way. As for Brighton, they will remain 10th, even if they win.

These two teams last met on 16th September 2023 at Old Trafford, and it was a game that Brighton won 3 – 1 through goals from ex-United and Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck (20’), German midfielder Pascal Gross (53’) and Brazil international forward Joao Pedro (71’).

In all competitions over the years, Brighton and Manchester United have come up against each other 32 times with United having the most wins with 20 compared to 7 for the Seagulls. There have been 5 draws between them both to date.

Liverpool (3rd) vs. Wolves (13th)

This game at Anfield on Sunday will be Jurgen Klopp’s last in charge of Liverpool Football Club. They will remain third in the Premier League whatever the result. With a win and other results going their way, Gary O’Neil’s Wolves could climb ahead of Crystal Palace, AFC Bournemouth, and Brighton into 10th place with a win on the Red side of Stanley Park.

When these two met at Molineux in their first league encounter of the season, it was a 3 – 1 win for Klopp’s Reds on 16th September 2023. Cody Gakpo (55’), Andy Robertson (85’), and an own goal late on in second half stoppage time from Portuguese defender Hugo Bueno secured the win (90+1’). The only goal for the home side came from Hwang Hee-Chan in the opening ten minutes of the contest (7’).

Overall, Liverpool and Wolves have come face to face on 115 occasions in all competitions over the years so far. The Reds have the most wins with 60 compared to 37 for Wolves. There have been 18 draws between them as of the time of writing.

Crystal Palace (12th) vs. Aston Villa (4th)

We now move on to the game at Selhurst Park between Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace and an Aston Villa side led by their Spanish Head Coach Unai Emery on Sunday 19th May. Having secured 4th place and UEFA Champions League football on Tuesday after Tottenham’s 2 – 0 defeat to Manchester City, this will be a game of little consequence for the Villans with the club unable to climb or fall down the table. As for Crystal Palace, they could climb as high as 10th if they win – this would see them leapfrog M23 Rivals Brighton.

Their inaugural league fixture of the season between these two teams at Villa Park resulted in a 3 – 1 win for the Villans thanks to goals from Jhon Duran (87’), Douglas Luiz (90+8’ – Penalty) and Leon Bailey (90+11’). The Eagles had initially taken the lead through Odsonne Edouard early on in the second half (47’).

These two teams have played against each other 52 times in total in all competitions with it being Villa who have the most wins in this fixture with 23 compared to Palace’s 14. There have been a total of 15 draws in all over the years.

Burnley (19th) vs. Nottingham Forest (17th)

The penultimate fixture to be mentioned here is the one between already relegated Burnley and Nottingham Forest, who are essentially safe. The game will be taking place at Turf Moor, and despite only being three clear of the drop, their goal difference of -19 is vastly superior to 18thplace Luton’s, which stands currently at -31. This makes it almost impossible for the Hatters to fend off relegation to the Championship, even with a win – making Nuno Espirito Santo’s Forest side essentially safe from the drop.

These two teams last met at the City Ground earlier on in the 2023/24 Premier League season on 18th September 2023, and it turned out to be a 1 – 1 draw. The goals in this stalemate came through Callum Hudson Odoi (61’) and Zeki Amdouni (41’) respectively.

Overall, Burnley and Nottingham Forest have encountered each other a total of 109 times to date, with it being the Clarets who have a superior record of 43 wins in this fixture in all competitions compared to 37 for Forest. There have been 29 draws between them.

Luton Town (18th) vs. Fulham (14th)

The tenth and final game of the 2023/24 Premier League season’s final day to preview is the one between almost relegated Luton Town and Marco Silva’s Fulham at Kenilworth Road on Sunday 19th May 2024. Rob Edwards’ Hatters have a vastly inferior goal difference to 17thplace Nottingham Forest, so they are unlikely to avoid an instant return to the English second tier, even with a win at home to the Cottagers.

The two sides last met in the Premier League at Craven Cottage in West London on 16th September in what was a 1 – 0 defeat for Luton against Fulham. The winning goal in this game came courtesy of Brazilian forward Carlos Vinicius midway through the second half (65’).

In all competitions, Luton Town and Fulham have played against one another 62 times so far with Fulham having more wins with 31 in total compared to 22 for Luton. The Cottagers and the Hatters have drawn against each other on 9 occasions so far.

Excitement and anticipation are growing rapidly ahead of the final day of the 2023/24 Premier League season on Sunday 19th May 2024. All matches this weekend will be getting underway at 16:00 in the afternoon.
