In 2017, the Grand National Festival provided spectators with some magnificent viewing with three sensational days of top-class horse racing creating some incredible memories at Aintree Racecourse.
Grand Opening Day traditionally features four superb Grade One contests including the Betfred Bowl and Aintree Doom Bar Hurdle.
In 2017 two of the biggest stars of National Hunt Racing took these two prestigious contests; with Tea for Two romping to victory in the Betfred Bowl before superstar mare Buveur D’Air stormed the Aintree Doom Bar Hurdle ahead of rival, My Tent Or Yours.
Aintree Racecourse also plays host to one of the most glamorous days of the sporting calendar, Grand National Ladies Day. This superb fixture of racing has become one of the most revered days of the season, not only for the thrilling action on the course but also for its unrivalled finery and luxury.
Three Grade One races including the JLT Melling Chase and Mildmay Novices’ Chase are the highlight of the day, while the Topham Chase allows fans to see horses take on the iconic Grand National fences; albeit over a distance of just over two-and-a-half miles.
These three intriguing contests were taken in 2017 by Fox Norton (JLT Melling Chase), Might Bite (Mildmay Novices’ Chase) and Ultragold (Topham Chase).
Then comes the iconic Grand National Day, which represents the blue riband event for the remarkable festival. In 2017 the prestigious handicap chase, run over a gruelling trip of four-and-a-quarter miles, was taken by One For Arthur, who became only the second ever Scottish trained Grand National winner.
The superb victory also signified a remarkable milestone as Lucinda Russell became only the fourth woman in the event’s history to train a winner in the marquee race.
There will certainly be much to look forward to as the event once again draws near.
