Official Cheltenham Festival Hospitality Packages – Champion Day, Ladies Day, St Patricks Thursday and Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup Day
The Cheltenham Festival features four jumps racing action, each hosting some the very best jumps races with a unique atmosphere.
The opening day of the Cheltenham Festival is Champion Day and is one of the best days of the whole year in terms of quality races. There are four Grade One contests including the Champion Hurdle one of the biggest races of the season.
The day opens with the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle which starts the four day bonanza of racing as the famous ‘Cheltenham roar’ echoes from the stands. The race is always a fascinating contest and has been won in recent years by the likes of Vautour, Douvan, Hors La Loi III and Brave Inca.
But the feature event of Champion Day is without doubt the Champion Hurdle. The premier two-mile hurdle anywhere in the world and has been won by some true legends with the likes of Istabraq, Hurricane Fly, Monksfield and Sea Pigeon all carving their names into the history of National Hunt Racing.
Annie Power laid to rest any memories of her infamous fall in the Mares Hurdle in 2015 as she produced a superb front-running display under the master of Cheltenham – Ruby Walsh. The wonder-mare finally got her first Cheltenham Festival victory after agonising defeats in 2014 and 2015.
Other major races for the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival include The Racing Post Arkle Challenge Trophy, OLGB Mares’ Hurdle, The National Hunt Novices’ Chase, The Ultima Handicap Chase and Close Brothers Novices’ Handicap Chase.
Cheltenham Festival Ladies Day is one of the most popular days of the meeting. As with all meetings Cheltenham Ladies Day is a stylish and glamourous event. With high-quality racing this is a day that is hotly anticipated each year.
Ladies Day is highlighted by the Queen Mother Champion Chase, the blue riband event for two-mile steeplechasers. It’s traditionally run at a ferocious pace with horses requiring both speed and great jumping ability. The list of winners includes Master Minded, Sprinter Sacre, Moscow Flyer and Flyingbolt; some of the greatest horses in the history of this division.
They say that the best horses never comeback from injury, but they aren’t all Sprinter Sacre. The 10-year-old rolled back the years to take the Queen Mother Champion Chase for a second-time. After being written-off just 12-months earlier, this victory meant there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
The Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle the race where so many future champions have made their mark. The Grade One event has been won by the likes of Istabraq, Faugheen, Hardy Eustace and Simonsig in recent years; highlighting the quality of the race.
Other major on Cheltenham Ladies Day include The RSA Chase, The Coral Cup, The Cross-Country Chase, The Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle and The Wetherby’s Champion Bumper.
Expect the Guinness to flow as the Irish fans celebrate St Patricks Day at the Cheltenham Festival. The fantastic atmosphere created throughout the day makes it very special, with races like the Stayers Hurdle among the best of the week.
The Sun Bets Stayers Hurdle is a true test of stamina for three-mile hurdlers and has been the scene of several history making performances. Inglis Drever became the first three-time winner of the race in 2008, but his record was smashed by the great Big Bucks who triumphed in four consecutive Stayers Hurdle’s between 2009 and 2012.
In 2016 the Stayers Hurdle witnessed arguably its finest ever performance as the imperious Thistlecrack destroyed a highly talented field in breathtaking fashion. Is the Cheltenham Gold Cup next for Colin Tizzard’s star?
The Ryanair Chase is another superb Grade One contest and was introduced to The Festival in 2005 and has been won by popular horses such as Cue Card, Albertas Run and Imperial Commander.
Other fantastic contests on day three include The JLT Novices’ Chase, The Pertemps Final, Brown Advisory & Merriebelle Stable Plate, Trull House Stud Mares´ Novices´ Hurdle and Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup.
The final day of the meeting is Cheltenham Gold Cup Day and is one of the biggest days in racing. The feature race is the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup the premier race of the week and the most prestigious chase in the world.
So many legends of horse racing have cemented their legacy in this gruelling three-and-a-quarter-mile test. Best Mate, Kauto Star, Golden Miller and Arkle were all multiple winners of the race highlighting the class of the contest. In 2016 Don Cossack finally broke his Cheltenham Festival duck as he romped to victory for Gordon Elliot and Bryan Cooper, with Djakadam producing another commendable effort to finish runner-up for the second consecutive year.
The Triumph Hurdle is the opening race of Cheltenham Gold Cup Day and is the biggest race of the season for juveniles. That is followed by a superb line-up of races including The Vincent O’Brien County Hurdle, Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle, St. James´s Place Foxhunter Chase Challenge Cup, Martin Pipe Hurdle and The Grand Annual Chase.
