Cheltenham Festival: St Patrick’s Day Review 2023
St Patrick’s Day, the penultimate day of the 2023 Cheltenham Festival followed the previous two days in being full of enthralling action with a great atmosphere at the racecourse.
It was yet another day of great racing, and it got underway with the Turners Novices Chase.
Turners Novices’ Chase – 13:30
Winner: Stage Star
The Turners Novices Chase opened the action on day three at Cheltenham. Stage Star took home the win.
Stage Star took the lead at the first fence before extending the lead over Balco Coastal in second place. Stage Star, ridden by Harry Cobden led all the way to the finish line, finishing ahead of Notlongtillmay (Great Britain) and the Mighty Potter (France) in second and third respectively.
Pertemps Handicap Hurdle – 14:10
Winner: Good Time Jonny
The 2023 Pertemps Handicap Hurdle was a great spectacle for all those watching, as Good Time Jonny emerged from the field to win the race after the final hurdle.
It was Burrows Park who took the lead initially following the first hurdle, going on to build a substantial lead. The chasing pack soon closed the gap with the field close together going into the last few fences. After a fantastic battle, Good Time Jonny came through the field to win the race.
The Ryanair Steeple Chase – 14:50
Winner: Envoi Allen
The 2023 Pertemps Handicap Hurdle was a great spectacle for all those watching, as Good Time Jonny emerged from the field to win the race after the final hurdle.
It was Burrows Park who took the lead initially following the first hurdle, going on to build a substantial lead. The chasing pack soon closed the gap with the field close together going into the last few fences. After a fantastic battle, Good Time Jonny came through the field to win the race.
The Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle – 15:30
Winner: Sire Du Berlais
Race Highlights:
The Stayers’ Hurdle is the most prestigious race of St. Patrick’s Day, and this year’s race certainly did not disappoint.
Flooring Porter took the lead at the start of the race, with Dashel Drasher just behind in second place. The lead was maintained until the closing stages of the race, when Sire Du Berlais finally emerged to win the race at the very last second. Teahupoo and Dashel Drasher finished second and third respectively.
This is Mark Walsh’s 8th win at the Cheltenham Festival.
Magners Plate – 16:10
Winner: Seddon
The 2023 Magners Plate was won by Seddon after an enthralling finale to the race.
Coole Coady took the lead with Seddon initially occupying second place in the opening stages of the Magners Plate. At the penultimate hurdle Seddon took the lead holding on to win the Magners Plate.
Fugitif (France) and Shakem Up’Arry (Ireland) finished in second and third place respectively.
Jack De Bromhead Mares Novices’ Hurdle – 16:50
Winner: You Wear It Well
The Jack De Bromhead Mares Novices’ Hurdle was the penultimate race of the day and it was entertaining right until the finish line.
It was Luccia who got off to the best start, but soon lost any advantage to You Wear It Well early on in the race. A strong lead was built up and jockey Gavin Sheehan was able to hold off a late challenge from Magical Zoe to win the 2023 Mares Novices’ Hurdle.
Magical Zoe (Ireland) had to settle for second place, whilst Halka Du Tabert (France) finished in third.
Kim Muir Handicap Chase – 17:30
Winner: Angels Dawn
The Kim Muir Handicap Chase was the final race to take place on St Patrick’s Day at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival.
It was Dr Kananga who was ahead from the start until Angels Dawn took the lead with just two fences to go. It was a close fought battle for the lead with Stumpton, but it was Angels Dawn who came out on top.
Stumpton settled for second, whilst Mr Incredible came third with Ireland winning the Prestbury Cup.
