2024 The Close Brothers Mares Hurdle Cheltenham Festival

Cheltenham Festival 2024: Day Two Preview

Following the exciting action from the opening day, all eyes are now on the races set to take place on Wednesday afternoon.

Once the action on the opening day of the 2024 Cheltenham Festival at the historic Cheltenham Racecourse was over, attention turned to the racing set to take place on day two (also known as Style Wednesday). Six races are set to take place on the afternoon of Wednesday, 13th March 2024.

It was announced on Wednesday morning that the Glenfarclas Cross Country Steeple Chase has been abandoned and will not be taking place at all this year due to adverse weather conditions. This has also resulted in not only the race count being reduced from seven to six but it has also seen the race times being changed as well. The races and their new start times can be found below.

  • 13:45 – Gallagher Novices’ Hurdle.
  • 14:30 – Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase.
  • 15:15 – Coral Cup Handicap Chase.
  • 16:00 – Betway Queen Mother Chase.
  • 16:50 – Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Challenge Cup Handicap Chase.
  • 17:30 – Weatherbys Champion Bumper.

Willie Mullins is the most successful trainer in the entire history of the illustrious Cheltenham Festival, and he is approaching what would be a truly historic landmark record of 100 wins. This is a feat that Mullins could very feasibly achieve this week, and he has 20 horses in the 6 races for today, so his chances of getting considerably closer to the century of wins are very high.

Let’s now take a look ahead at the six races that are set to take place on day two of the 2024 Cheltenham Festival, from the Gallagher Novices’ Hurdle (13:30) to the Weatherbys Champion Bumper, which will round off the action for Style Wednesday at 17:30.

Gallagher Novices’ Hurdle (13:45)

The race that will open the proceedings on Style Wednesday will be the 2024 edition of the Gallagher Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham Racecourse. In 2023, Paul Townend’s Impaire Et Passe came away victorious from this race last year, with Patrick Mullins’ Gaelic Warrior and Danny Mullins’ Champ Kiely coming in second and third place, respectively.

This year, there will be a field of 7 runners for the 2024 race, and they will be as follows: Ballyburn (Paul Townend), Ile Atlantique (Patrick Mullins), Predators Gold (Danny Mullins), Handstands (Harry Cobden), Jingko Blue (Nico de Boinville), Jimmy Du Seuil (Sean O’Keefe) and Mercurey (Brian Hayes).

Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase (14:30)

Race two of day two at this year’s Cheltenham Festival is set to be the 2024 Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase. In this race last year, it was Sam Twiston-Davies’ The Real Whacker who came out on top ahead of some stern competition from the runner-up that day, Jordan Gainford’s Gerri Colombe, and Daryl Jacob’s Bronn, who came in third place overall.

This year’s race will feature six horses: Fact To File (Mark Walsh), Stay Away Fay (Harry Cobden), Monty’s Star (Rachael Blackmore), American Mike (Jack Kennedy), Sandor Clegane (Sean O’Keefe), and Giovinco (Stephen Mulqueen).

Coral Cup Handicap (15:15)

The halfway point of Style Wednesday will see the 2024 edition of the Coral Cup Handicap take place as the third race of the day at Cheltenham Racecourse. Langer Dan, trained by Dan Skelton and ridden by Jockey Harry Skelton, won the Handicap Chase back in 2023, finishing ahead of James Slevin’s An Epic Song and Aidan Coleman’s Compound, who both completed the top three in this race.

Rachael Blackmore’s Captain Guinness and Harry Cobden’s Greaneteen had to settle for second and third place, respectively.

This year, there will be a field of 7 runners, and the horses taking part are set to be as follows: El Fabiolo (Paul Townend), Edwardstone (Tom Cannon), Captain Guinness (Rachael Blackmore), Gentleman De Mee (Mark Walsh), Elixir De Nutz (Freddie Gingell), Boothill (Jonathan Burke) and Funambule Sivola (Charlie Deutsch).

Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Challenge Cup Handicap Chase (16:50)

The penultimate race of Style Wednesday will follow, and it will be the 2024 edition of the Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Challenge Cup Handicap Chase. 2023’s winner was Maskada, ridden by jockey Darragh O’Keefe and trained by Henry De Bromhead. Luke Dempsey’s Dinoblue and Luca Morgan’s Global Citizen came second and third.

The horses that make up the 16 runners set to compete in the race on Wednesday afternoon are as follows: Libberty Hunter (Harry Cobden), Madara (James Reveley), Sa Fureur (Jack Kennedy), Saint Roi (Mark Walsh), Maskada (Darragh O’Keefe), Path D’oroux (Keith Donoghue), Hardy Du Seuil (Gavin Sheehan), Unexpected Party (Harry Skelton), Harper’s Brook (Kielan Woods), Solness (James Slevin), Calico (Tristan Durrell), The King Of Prs (Sean Flanagan), Triple Trade (Brendan Powell), Gemirande (Charlie Deutsch), The Folkes Tiara (Rachael Blackmore) and Frere D’Armes (Ciaran Gethings).

Weatherbys Champion Bumper (17:30)

The sixth and final race on day two (Style Wednesday) will be the 2024 renewal of the Weatherbys Champion Bumper. Back in 2023, A Dream To Share, ridden by John Gleeson, won the race last year, aged just 18. Patrick Mullins’ Fact To File and Harry Cobden’s Captain Teague came in second and third place, rounding off this race’s top three.

There will be no less than 20 horses making up the field in Wednesday’s race, with the runners being as follows: Jalon D’oudairies (Jack Kennedy), Jasmin De Vaux (Patrick Mullins), The Yellow Clay (Jordan Gainford), Cantico (Paul Townend), You Oughta Know (Danny Mullins), Fleur Au Fusil (Jody Townend), Teeshan (Harry Cobden), Romeo Coolio (Keith Donoghue), Argento Boy (Brian Hayes), Sixmilebridge (Kielan Woods), Bill Joyce (Jonjo O’Neill Jr), C’est Ta Chance (Daryl Jacob), Quebecois (Lorcan Williams), Royal Infantry (Harry Skelton), Sounds Victorius (Sean O’Keefe), Stavvy (Bryony Frost), Fishery Lane (Michael O’Sullivan), Dirty Den (Micheal Nolan), Union Avenue (Danny McMenamin) and Tripoli Flyer (Paddy Brennan).
