Aintree Grand National: Definitly Red looks set to miss National Steeplechase
Cotswold Chase winner, Definitly Red, looks likely to miss the Grand National this year with trainer, Brian Ellison, fearing that a ‘hard’ Aintree race could negatively impact next season – the decision appears to be irrespective of the Gelding’s performance in the Gold at next month’s hotly anticipated Cheltenham Festival.
The 9-year-old is as short as 14/1 for Aintree but has been allotted top weight of 11st 10lb.
Ellison had originally announced that a decision would be made on the National after the Gold Cup result, but on Tuesday then stipulated that a positive result at Cheltenham would make him more than likely go for the Betway Bowl Chase at Aintree instead.
He added: “I don’t think many horses can win the National off top weight and if he had a hard race he might not be the same horse next season.
“If he can finish in the first four in the Gold Cup there are a lot of good races to go for next season.”
The renowned ‘Angel of the North’ arguably has some unfinished business at Aintree, after last year’s unfortunate saddle-slip in the National. He has certainly flourished this season, however, winning two Grade 2’s including Cheltenham’s Cotswold Chase, subsequently earning him a place in the Timico Gold Cup field in March.
Time will tell whether the impressive runner will feature in this year’s Grand National.
