Grand National 2018 Winner: Davy Russell

Discover more about the racing career of champion jockey Davy Russell

In 2018, Davy Russell won the prestigious Grand National race with horse Tiger Roll. Born in Ireland in 1979 Russell has had a successful horse racing season throughout his time. Triumphs included the Cheltenham Gold Cup (3 times) and of course now the Grand National.

The 2018 Grand National saw Davy Russell secure a victory after his 14th attempt on the rigorous Aintree racecourse. He was the oldest jockey in the line-up on the smallest horse. It was described as a photo finish as Tiger Roll beat Pleasant Company by a nose hair in a nail-biting end.

This was an emotional victory for the Irish jockey who was sadly grieving over the death of his mother weeks before the race. Paying tribute to his beloved mother he stated: “she was a very kind woman, she was always there throughout my career”.

In 2013 Davy Russell lost his job as “top jockey” for trainer Michael O’Leary’s horse Gigginstown. The decision was said to be made over tea at Punchestown. Russell was no doubt devastated by the news but he was determined to keep going and chase his dreams of winning the Grand National. When asked back in 2013 about what he would do now he said he will continue to do what he always does and take over the world.

Racing History

Russell’s racing career began with point to point races which led onto many great things. In 2002 he moved to England and became stable jockey to Ferdy Murphy. A win came soon after in the Antique race at Sedgefield. This was a successful partnership for the two with 50 winners in two seasons. He also placed second in the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2003.

Back to his roots Russell had his first win in Ireland in 2002 on Colonel Monroe at Limerick. Many more successful wins followed this. In 2006 he claimed his first Cheltenham Festival win on horse Native Jack.

Demand for the jockey soared in the 2006/07 season making him one of the most popular jockeys in Ireland. Which was followed by a multitude of Grade 1 and 2 races.

Highlights of his racing career include his 2012 win at the Irish Jump Jockey Champion race. A massive three wins at the Cheltenham Festival and of course being presented the “leading jockey award” at Cheltenham.

Overall, Davy Russell is a great jockey who has achieved many extraordinary wins. The Grand National 2018 was no doubt a highlight of his career and in his own words a “dream come true”.
