Grand National Runners 2018: Ninety Runners in Contention
A total of 90 horses remain in contention for the Randox Health Grand National at Aintree this year following the conclusion of the latest forfeit stage.
Nigel Twiston-Davies’ Blaklion and Willie Mullins’ Total Recall, who is also scheduled to run in the Cheltenham Festival’s Gold Cup this March, are the event’s headline runners as it stands.
Trainer Stuart Coltherd is also hopeful of a good run for 100/1 shot Captain Redbeard, who impressively landed the Tommy Whittle Chase at Haydock before Christmas with jockey son, Sam.
The Selkirk-based trainer has applauded the exemplary shape of his 9-year-old Gelding, and believes he has what it takes to be a serious contender for the prestigious Aintree steeplechase.
Captain Redbeard, who was twice victorious over fences during his novice campaign last season, finished second in the Grade Two Peter Marsh Chase in January behind Colin Tizzard’s The Dutchman.
It will certainly make for exciting viewing when he lines up at Aintree this April.
Meanwhile, bookies favourite Blaklion, is set to bypass the Cheltenham Timico Gold Cup as he retains his focus solely on the steeplechase at Aintree. The Nigel Twiston-Davies’-trained Gelding, who is to be ridden by son Sam, became the National’s clear frontrunner after his comfortable 9-length win in the Becher Chase last December.
