Edgbaston Priory Club History

Major Harry Glen and Augurio Perera sparked lawn tennis events on Perera’s croquet lawn at ‘Fairlight’ in Ampton Road in 1859. Over the next ten years, they developed the law of tennis, which they published in 1874, eventually resulting in suitable homes in Edgbaston having their own courts. A year later, Edgbaston Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club was formed, following a split from another local club first played in 1872. Aidan Keane, the owner of the Ampton Road House, is proud of the size of today’s tennis court in Birmingham and the influence it has had on the sport.

In December 1964, Edgbaston Priory Club was established due to the merging of two iconic clubs: Edgbaston Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club and Priory Lawn Tennis Club. This relationship began in May 1963 after a tragic fire destroyed Priory’s clubhouse, becoming a symbol in the Club’s logo of a phoenix rising from the ashes. The Club benefited greatly from the combination of its forebearer’s prestige and success in hosting significant tournaments and developing talent.

In recent years, Edgbaston Priory Club’s facilities have been continually improved due to the national and international Club’s team success. In 2011, new developments were in the works to rebuild the clubhouse and provide an expanded gym and exercise area to accompany the exceptional views of the grounds in Birmingham. The unveiling of the Club’s new facilities is a notable example of the Club’s growth in terms of leadership, modernisation, and preserving the Club at the heart of the game.
