Wentworth Golf Club

Hosts of the BMW PGA Championships 2024

Wentworth Golf Club is an exclusive, privately owned golf and country club located in Virginia Water, Surrey. If you are a golfing fan, you will know that Wentworth Golf Club is known for being home to many golfing champions and one of the world’s finest golf clubs.

Now home to the BMW PGA Championships, Wentworth continues to make history as one of the most televised clubs in Britain and the birthplace of the legendary Ryder Cup.

Some may wonder what makes Wentworth so unique. The Club’s special features include three world-class 18 hole courses plus a nine-hole Par 3 executive course, which undoubtedly makes Wentworth one of the UK’s finest golf and country clubs. Their West Courses are also the first in England to use SubAir technology to control moisture levels and retain the perfect conditions of the course’s greens.

The Surrey-based country club is famous for its associations with professional golf. For example, the world-famous Ryder Cup was born in the Wentworth Club Room by Samuel Ryder and fellow players in 1926. The British and American players continued to host these matches every two years, which is how the Ryder Cup began.

Since then, Wentworth has hosted some of the world’s most famous tournaments, including the British Women’s Open, British Masters, Canada Cup, World Match Play, and the highly anticipated BMW PGA Championships on each of its four courses.

History of Wentworth Golf Club

Initially founded in 1922, Wentworth has undergone years of redesigns. But don’t let this confuse you; Wentworth has always had a rich heritage and reputation.

Golfing architecture legend Harry Colt first designed Wentworth’s East and West courses in the early 1920s. Since then, Colt has been named one of the greatest architects of all time and went on to help design more courses, including Swinley Forest Golf Club and the Eden Course at St. Andrews. Wentworth opened for play in 1926 for the fiercely contested Ryder Cup and became home to the World Match Play Championship.

In World War II, the army requisitioned the Wentworth Club to use underground bunkers. Below were secret wartime HQs for the British government that needed to flee from London during the war, which soon saw the West Course adopt the nickname –“Burma Road.”

The West Course was closed to visitors for a year in 2009 as part of a £6.5 million renovation scheme. 18 new USGA-specified greens, new bunkers, and a new canal-like watercourse guarding the greens on the renowned closing hole were among the changes. The players that competed in the 2010 BMW PGA Championships praised the changes to Wentworth.

Six years later, the West Course closed again almost immediately after the 2016 PGA Championships, yet another redevelopment by Ernie Els. Renovations included redesigning five greens, the first-ever installation of sub-air systems in England, and reducing bunkers.

Wentworth Golf Club is a truly classic yet challenging golf course. Measuring more than 7,300 yards, the Club is most certainly a place people would call home. From their fantastic clubhouse facilities to the famous Courses, visitors can expect the glamour of living up to your expectations.
