History of Wentworth Golf Club
Wentworth Golf Club was founded in 1922 and has since developed into one of the most recognisable venues in British golf, with a history closely linked to the growth of professional golf and international competition.
The club’s origins can be traced back to the early 19th century, when the Gothic-style house known as Wentworths was built. The property was subsequently acquired by developer Walter George Tarrant in 1920, who recognised the potential to establish a residential estate and golf club within the surrounding Surrey countryside.
Renowned golf course architect Harry Colt was commissioned to design Wentworth’s original courses. The East Course opened in 1924, followed by the West Course in 1927, establishing the foundations of the club’s reputation as a leading golfing destination.
Wentworth hosted the historic International Match between British and American professionals in 1926, an encounter recognised as a precursor to the Ryder Cup. The club later hosted the official Ryder Cup in 1953, when the United States defeated Great Britain by six points to five.
The club’s association with professional golf continued to grow throughout the following decades. Wentworth hosted the inaugural World Match Play Championship in 1964 and has also welcomed tournaments including the British Masters, the Women’s British Open and the Canada Cup.
The Edinburgh Course opened in 1990, adding a third 18-hole course to Wentworth’s golfing facilities. Designed by Gary Player, John Jacobs and Bernard Gallacher, the course further expanded the club’s appeal to golf enthusiasts.
The West Course has undergone significant renovations over the years, including work overseen by Ernie Els and his design team. Following the 2016 BMW PGA Championship, the course underwent further redevelopment, with improvements to its greens, bunkers, drainage and irrigation systems.
The renovations included the introduction of SubAir technology across all 18 greens, making Wentworth the first golf club in England to install the system throughout an entire course. The technology allows the club’s greenkeeping team to manage moisture levels and maintain consistent playing conditions.
The historic Clubhouse has also benefited from extensive investment, with major renovations completed in 2018 to enhance the facilities available to members and guests.
Today, Wentworth remains home to the BMW PGA Championship, with the West Course regularly welcoming some of the biggest names in world golf. Its combination of sporting heritage, modern facilities and first-class hospitality makes it an excellent destination for experiencing one of the leading events on the DP World Tour calendar.
