The London Stadium is the home of West Ham United Football Club and UK Athletics. The stadium hosts a plethora of events and can have a capacity of up to 80,000.

The venue was built for the 2012 London Olympics, where it hosted both the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as a plethora of athletics events.

West Ham are one of the most successful English clubs. They have won the historic FA Cup on 3 occasions (1963/64, 1974/75 & 1979/80). There were also three West Ham players in the 1966 England World Cup squad, which included the legendary Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters.

The Hammers moved into the London Stadium in August 2016 after spending 112 years at Upton Park.

History Of The Stadium

The London Stadium was purpose built for the historic 2012 Olympic Games in London. Construction began in May 2008 with the construction of this brand new London landmark was completed by October 2011, well in advance of the start of the upcoming Olympic Games, which were set to start with the Opening Ceremony on 27th July 2012.

It has been the home of UK Athletics since 2015, with West Ham moving there from Upton Park in August 2016. The first Premier League match at the stadium took place on 21st August 2016, where they beat AFC Bournemouth 1-0 courtesy of a Michail Antonio goal.

Athletics are also an important part of the London Stadium. Several records were broken in the stadium during the 2012 Olympic Games. For example, Usain Bolt ran the second fastest 100m race of all time, whilst David Rudisha broke his own world record when he became the first man to run 800m in less than 1 minute and 41 seconds.

The latest London Athletics Meet will be taking place at the London Stadium on Saturday 19th July 2025 as part of the Wanda Diamond League, and it will feature the likes of Noah Lyles, Femke Bol, Dina Asher-Smith, and Keely Hodgkinson, who won the Gold Medal in the Women’s 800m race at the most recent Olympics in Paris.

How do I get to London Stadium by car?

The closest location to the stadium to park your car is at Stratford Westfield (International Way, London E20 1EE), which holds three car parks (A, B & C). You can easily access car parks A & B from Roundhouse Lane. You can find access to Car Park C on Montfichet Road.

Please note that only car parks A & B are open for entry and exit at all times. For Car Park C, this is open from 5am to 10pm from Monday to Saturday, whilst it will be open from 7am to 10pm on Sundays.

There are designated disabled parking available too, which you will be able to find at all three car parks. The London Stadium is a 9 minute walk from Stratford Westfield.

How do I get to London Stadium by train/tube?

The closest station to the London Stadium is the Pudding Mill Lane Station, which is a 10 minute walk away and it can be accessed by using the Docklands Light Railway service.

There are several other stations in a close proximity to the ground. Stratford Station is 15 minutes away with access via the Central and Jubilee Lines, the Docklands Light Railway, National Rail, London Overground trains as well as the Elizabeth Line.

Stratford International station is also a 15 minute walk away with access via the Docklands Light Railway and the South-eastern High Speed 1 services.

The other station that you can use is Hackney Wick Station, which is accessible via the London Overground and it is a 15 minute walk away from the London Stadium.

How do I get to London Stadium by bus?

When travelling to the London Stadium there are several bus services that you can use. The 388, the 308, the 339 as well as the D8 service. They are all available for travel to the London Stadium for whatever event you are attending.

All seats will be together, and the block is M12.

What are the closest transport links to the London Stadium?

There is Stratford Station, which is located about a 20 minute walk away from the London Stadium, is served by Docklands Light Railway (DLR), the London Underground Jubilee and Central Line Services, National Rail operated by C2C and Greater Anglia, as well as TFL Rail, the Elizabeth Line, and the London Overground. There is also a shuttle bus service which travels between this station and the stadium itself.

The Stratford International Station is also about a 20 minute walk away, whilst there is also the Pudding Mill Lane Station (10 minute walk approx.), Hackney Wick Station (20 minute walk approx.), and Stratford High Street Station (20 minute walk approx.).

There are a number of bus services that you can use to travel to the London Stadium, which include the 388, 308, 339, and the D8.

It is not advisable to travel to the stadium by car due to extensive road closures around the ground on matchdays. It is advised that you use public transportation instead.
