Discover More About Riverside Cricket Ground
In the early 1990s, Durham CCC was clearly capable of making it to first-class cricket, but were restricted by their existing ground. The Riverside ground was commissioned and it was completed in 1995, seeing its first game that year. The ground has a full capacity of 17,000, and other features were added to the ground over the years after.
The inaugural match was against Warwickshire, in May 1995. The ground first held test matches four years later in 1999, with the teams of Pakistan, Scotland, Australia and Bangladesh heading to Emirates Riverside. Following this a year later was a triangular series between England, Zimbabwe and the West Indies of which two games were held at here.
Riverside has hosted a total of six test matches, most notably a 2013 Ashes. This match saw England win in one of the most evenly matched Ashes series to date, where two of the five games ended up draws.
Riverside has also been host to many concerts in the past, with acts such as Sir Paul McCartney and Little Mix playing there. As a concert venue, there is a capacity for 20,000 music fans to attend.
Having had Riverside ICG built in the mid-1990s, the team were finally allowed to make their way to first-class cricketing successes. It took them just over 20 years to claim their first County Championship in their final game of the season, playing Kent away at Canterbury. This game also saw Kent relegated, as Durham moved 8 points clear of runners up Nottinghamshire.
Just a year later they retained their title again, by beating Nottinghamshire in another close title race, winning by an innings and 52 runs. The two counties can’t seem to be in a title race without each other, as Durham beat them to take the title, by eight wickets, in the 2013 campaign again.
