Resorts World in Birmingham is one of the youngest venues in the country. Construction on this world class entertainment complex began in 2013, with the venue opening it’s doors two years later in Autumn 2015. However, the resorts world arena, which is located next door, has itself has been around for far longer.

Construction of The Resorts World Arena began on 11th April 1979, with the venue finally opening its doors in December 1980. The Arena was famously opened by Queen Elizabeth II.

The very first artist to perform at The Resorts World Arena was Queen, with legendary lead singer Freddie Mercury on Friday 5th December 1980. The venue also went onto host Elvis Costello, Squeeze, UB40, Madness, The Selecter, Dave Edmunds Rockpile and John Cooper Clarke later that same month.

The venue was originally known as  known as the ‘Birmingham International Arena’. It was not long before the name of the Arena was changed to the ‘NEC Arena’ on 5th September 1983. This name stuck with the venue for 28 years, until 1st September 2008, where it then became known as the ‘LG Arena’.

Following the change of it’s name, the Arena went through some renovation work worth £29 million. The renovations upgraded the venue’s facilities, with the capacity also being expanded to 16,000. The renovations were completed a year later in October 2009.

The venue later became known as the Genting Arena on 6th January 2015, before the name changing once more to Genting’s Resorts World Birmingham in the years that followed.

Before 2023, the arena has hosted an astonishing total of 984 concerts over the 43 years of the venue’s existence.
