Manchester United welcome Galatasaray to Old Trafford for this 2023/24 Champions League match.

Turkish Champions Galatasaray are going to be the visitors to Old Trafford when they come face to face with Erik Ten Hag’s Manchester United in the group stages of the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League. The two giants of European football are set to meet on Tuesday, 3rd October 2023, in an 8 p.m. kick-off.

The Red Devils are no strangers to the Champions League and have won it three times as of the time of writing. A 4 – 1 victory against Portuguese giants Benfica saw them win their first European crown before a second came when they beat Bayern Munich 2 – 1 spectacularly at the Camp Nou in the 1998/99 season. United’s most recent victory in this competition was against Chelsea in the 2007/08 season, where Sir Alex Ferguson’s side won 6 – 5 on penalties.

As for Galatasaray, whilst they have never won the UEFA Champions League, they are regular participants in this competition. They have played 27 times in this competition, including in just the second season of the European Cup in 1956/57. The furthest that Galatasaray have ever got in the Champions League was in the 1988/89 season when they got to the semi-finals, where they lost 5 – 1 on aggregate against Romanian side FC Steaua București.

In the 2022/23 Premier League season, Manchester United finished in 2nd place after accumulating 75 points from their 38 matches, securing them a place in the Champions League. There was silverware for the Red Devils last term after Casemiro (33’) and Marcus Rashford (39’) secured a 2 – 0 victory in the Carabao Cup Final against Newcastle United at Wembley.

As mentioned previously, Galatasaray are the reigning Turkish Champions. They won the Süper Lig title with 88 points, eight ahead of fierce rivals Fenerbahçe in 2nd. However, they did have to go through three qualifying rounds to make the Group Stages of the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League.

They were 3 – 2 winners on aggregate against Lithuanian Club Žalgiris in the second qualifying round before beating Slovenia’s Olimpija 4-0 on aggregate to reach the play-off round. Norwegian side Molde were Galatasaray’s opponents, and the Turkish side managed to emerge as 5 – 3 aggregate winners over two legs to secure their spot in the Group Stages of the Champions League.

Manchester United and Galatasaray have met six times in the UEFA Champions League. In October 1993, they drew 3 – 3 at Old Trafford before the Turkish side secured a win on the away goals rule after they drew 2 – 2 in Turkey in November 1993. They then met in the group stages in 1994, drawing 0-0 in Turkey before winning 4 – 0 at Old Trafford.

It was in the group stages of the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League that these two clubs met most recently. They won the first game 1-0 at home before losing 1-0 in the second game.

Marcus Rashford scored 30 goals for Manchester United in all competitions last term (2022/23). Meanwhile, in all competitions, Mauro Icardi was Galatasaray’s leading goal scorer, scoring 23 goals.
