Craven Cottage History
Craven Cottage has been the home of Premier League side Fulham for almost 130 years since they moved there in 1896. This excludes a brief spell that they spent playing their home matches nearby at Queens Park Rangers’ Loftus Road for two years between 2002 and 2004.
They played at a number of grounds before Craven Cottage, including but not limited to The Mud Pond (1879 – 1883), Lillie Road (1883 – 1886), Ranelagh House (1886 – 1888, and the Barn Elms Playing Fields (1888 – 1889). The four stands at Fulham’s Craven Cottage are as follows: The Hammersmith End, the Putney End, the Riverside Stand, and finally the Johnny Hayes Stand.
Fulham were founded all the way back in 1879, and they are a historic club that has enjoyed some great success over the years. They have won three Second Division Championships (1948/49, 2000/01, & 2021/22), and two third division titles (1931/32 & 1998/99).
Additionally, they were runners-up in the 1974/75 FA Cup, whilst also famously reaching the 2010 UEFA Europa League Final, where they lost narrowly at extra time against the Spanish Giants Atletico Madrid in what was a 2 – 1 defeat for the Cottagers on that night at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, Germany. Along the run to the Final, they had beaten the likes of Basel (1 – 0), Juventus (5 – 4 on aggregate), Wolfsburg (3 – 1 on aggregate), and finally Hamburg SV (2 – 1 on aggregate).
They have lifted the now defunct UEFA Intertoto Cup back in 2002 alongside Malaga and Stuttgart.
Structure and facilities
The capacity of the stadium is 29,589, and it consists of four stands, which are the Hammersmith End, the Putney End, the Riverside Stand, and the Johnny Hayes Stand.
Hammersmith End
The Hammersmith End is the northernmost stand at this historic ground and is close in proximity to the London borough of Hammersmith, with the roofing for it having been financed by Alan Mullery’s sale to capital rivals Spurs in 1964. This is the stand where you will usually find the most vocal and passionate of the Fulham faithful on a matchday.
Putney End
Located at the Southernmost point in the ground, this particular stand is home to both the home fans and the away fans as well on each and every matchday. The capacity of this stand is no less than 6,230 – 2,700 of these seats are able to be filled by away supporters.
Riverside Stand
Moving on to the Riverside Stand, this has gone through an extensive renovation in recent times, with the redevelopment starting in the summer of 2019. Then, 6 years later, it was announced on 13th May 2025 that the Riverside Stand was ready to fully open.
This stand was originally terracing that backed onto the River Thames, before it became an all seater stand in the 1971/72 season. It was used for a friendly between Fulham and a Benfica side featuring the legendary forward Eusebio in 1972.
It is the home of hospitality at Craven Cottage, and it is where our spectacular Sky Deck Hospitality is based.
Johnny Hayes Stand
Finally, the Johnny Hayes Stand was originally known as the Stevenage Road Stand, and it has the honour of being the oldest remaining football stand in the football league and professional football as a whole, with its construction having been started all the way back in 1905, with it being designed by the iconic stadium architect Archibald Leitch. It was renamed to the Johnny Hayes Stand after his death in 2005.
