Molineux Stadium History
Molineux has been the home of Wolverhampton Wanderers for almost 140 years since it was built and opened all the way back in 1889. The club moved to their current home after spending the first years of their existence following their founding playing at various grounds, including Goldthorn Hill, John Harper’s Field, and Dudley Road. The four stands at Molineux are named as follows: The Steve Bull Stand, the Sir Jack Hayward Stand, the Stan Cullis Stand, and finally the Billy Wright Stand.
Wolves were founded all the way back in 1877, and they are a historic club that has enjoyed great success over the years. The West Midlands outfit have won three top flight titles (1953/54, 1957/58 & 1958/59), four FA Cups (1892/93, 1907/08, 1948/49 & 1959/60), and also two League Cups (1973/74 & 1979/80).
They have also experienced several memorable European nights over the years, and they have previously reached the UEFA Cup Final (Now the Europa League) back in the 1971/72 season. Wolves were also key in the development of Europe wide football cup competitions, and they were amongst the participants in the early days of UEFA’s competitions back in the 1950s.
Current Head Coach Vitor Pereira will be looking to steer Wolves well clear of the drop zone, whilst looking towards a potential mid table finish come the end of the current 2024/25 Premier League season.
In the future, the Portuguese could look to guide the club back to the European stage with the last time that they played in Europe being in the 2019/20 season, when they took part in that year’s UEFA Europa League.
Structure and facilities
The capacity of the stadium is 32,050, and it consists of four stands, which are the Steve Bull Stand, the Sir Jack Hayward Stand, the Stan Cullis Stand, and finally the Billy Wright Stand.
Steve Bull Stand
The Steve Bull Stand is named after club legend Steve Bull MBE, who spent 13 years at the club from 1986 to 1999 where he made more than 470 appearances whilst also scoring no less than 306 goals in all competitions, which included no less than 18 hat-trick – both of these are club records as of the time of writing.
Sir Jack Hayward Stand
Moving on to the Sir Jack Hayward Stand, this is named after their legendary former Owner and Chairman Sir Jack Hayward OBE. He saved the club from financial oblivion, buying the club for just over £2m when they were in the Second Division in May 1990. The club went on to enjoy back-to-back promotions. Hayward personally invested no less than £70 million into Molineux whilst writing off annual debts throughout what was an extraordinary 17 years with him at the helm.
Stan Cullis Stand
As for the Stan Cullis Stand, it is named in tribute to Stan Cullis, who is a legendary former player and manager of the club. As a player, he spent more than a decade, making 171 appearances between 1934 and 1947 after initially joining from Ellesmere Port Wednesday.
As a Manager, he served from 1948 and 1964, where he won two FA Cups, as well as no less than 3 league titles. Overall, Cullis had served the club for what was an extraordinary 30 years.
Billy Wright Stand
Finally, we move on to the Billy Wright Stand, which was named after yet another legendary Wolves player, this time in the form of Billy Wright. He played as a wing half and as a central defender over the course of his illustrious career with Wolves and was a previous record appearance holder with 541 since joining as a trainee in 1938. He led the club to an FA Cup Final win in 1949, as well as three First Division titles before his retirement in 1959. He also scored 16 goals in what was a spectacular 21 year spell with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
