The Newmarket  July Festival is a prestigious event in the sport of horse racing, taking place at the historic Newmarket Racecourse, which has been hosting horse racing since 1667. The Festival itself is historic with it being a regular event since it’s inception in 1876 – it was most recently won by Alcohol Free in 2022, ridden by Rob Hornby.

More about the Newmarket July Festival:

The Newmarket Racecourse is one of the oldest and most prestigious racecourses not just in the country, but also in the world. It was first opened all the way back in the 17th century, or more specifically 1667. One of the earliest reasons for the racecourse’s fame was because King Charles II road a horse at the Newmarket Town Plate in 1671, and becoming the first reigning monarch to ride a winner in the history of the sport of horse racing.

In terms of the Newmarket July Festival, it has a long and illustrious history all of its own. The July Festival began all the way back in 1876. Colt Springfield, a horse that was bred by Queen Victoria, was very successful in the first two renewals, in the early days of the festival. This achievement was later repeated by Charibert in 1880 and 1881.

And, famously, Ormonde, who was the holder of the prestigious Triple Crown, beat the two nearest rivals to claim victory in 1887. The triple crown is made up of the 2000 Guineas Stakes, The Derby at Epsom and The St Leger Stakes at Town Moor in Doncaster.

Sundridge is one of the most successful horses in the sport of horse racing, with a record of 17 wins in 35 starts. Sundridge won three renewals in a row, from it’s first in 1902, until it won it’s third in succession in 1904.

Fast forward to the 21st century, there have been 5 different winners in the last 5 renewals. US Navy Flag won in 2018, before Ten Sovereigns claimed victory a year later in 2019. Oxted was declared champion in 2020 before an Ed Walker trained Starman won the 2021 renewal. Alcohol Free, ridden by Rob Hornby was the winner of the 2022 race.

There was much anticipation ahead of the 2023 July Festival. Shaquille, ridden by Rossa Ryan were amongst the favourites to take the race win and on the day of the race, Ryan and Shaquille lived up to expectations, taking home the victory ahead of Run to Freedom and Kinross who had to settle for second and third place respectively.

It was a comfortable and impressive victory for Shaquille in the end, winning by a margin of one and a half lengths. All eyes will now be on the race in 2024.

Yes, there is a dress code. You are encouraged to dress in smart clothing in the premier enclosure. Smart trousers, tailored shorts, a shirt, formal shoes (or dress) or trouser suit with a hat or fascinator are all allowed but this it is not compulsory. Jeans ARE permitted as long as they are dark denim and not ripped, scruffy or torn.

Yes, there is disabled access at the Newmarket Racecourse. Just like the Rowley Mile, the July Course has disabled access with dedicated raised platforms at trackside and the parade ring.

No, all parking in the public car parks is free of charge for everyone who is attending.
