More about the Newmarket July Festival:
Newmarket Racecourse is one of the oldest and most prestigious racecourses, not just in the country, but also in the world. It was first opened all the way back in the 17th Century, specifically in 1667. One of the earliest reasons for the racecourse’s fame was that King Charles II rode a horse at the Newmarket Town Plate in 1671, becoming the first reigning monarch to ride a winner in the history of the sport of horse racing.
In terms of the Newmarket July Festival, it has a long and illustrious history of its own, with its most famous race, the July Cup, first run in 1876. The first ever winner was Springfield, bred by Queen Victoria, and this royal horse would go on to win the following year’s race as well.
The most recent July Cup was won in 2025 by No Half Measures, with the Richard Hughes-trained horse being ridden to victory by Jockey Neil Callan. Callan and his horse finished just ahead of some fierce competition from the likes of runner-up Big Mojo, ridden by Tom Marquand, and Run To Freedom, who was ridden by Trevor Whelan, who had to settle for what was a third-place finish in the end to round off the top three in this race.
The 2026 July Festival will take place over three days, from Thursday, 9th July to Saturday, 11th July, at the historic Newmarket Racecourse.
