Springboks v Wales and Barbarians v Fiji Hospitality – Private Box Package – Twickenham Stadium 2024
Four iconic teams from club and international rugby are set to take part in two fixtures in one day at the famous and historic Twickenham Stadium on Saturday 22nd June 2024. The first game, between South Africa and Wales will be played at 2pm. This will then be swiftly followed by the Killik Cup contest between Barbarians and Fiji.
Starting with the Springboks and Wales, these two rugby powerhouses met most recently at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, where South Africa came away as 16 – 52 winners on 19th August 2023.
South Africa are the reigning World Champions, with the Springboks beating New Zealand 12 – 11 at the Stade de France to win the 2023 title. As for Wales, the most recent of their 6 Six Nations titles was won back in 2021.
Two matches previously, Wales claimed their first ever away win against the Springboks, beating them 12 – 13 at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on 9th July 2022. Wales’ most recently got the better of South Africa at the Millennium Stadium when they were 20 – 11 winners in Cardiff on 24th November 2018.
One particularly memorable match between these two took place back in a tour match at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on 26th June 1999. This is the date of Wales’ first-ever victory against South Africa, with the home team beating their visitors 29 – 19 in the end. Mark Taylor scored the first ever try at this ground.
Moving on to the second blockbuster game of the day, club and international rugby is set to collide head on when Barbarians take on Fiji for possession of the famous Killik Cup.
The Killik Cup is a trophy that is contested between the Barbarians and a nation. The first ever match to win this coveted title took place in 2011, when Australia were the Barbarians’ opponents on 26th November of that year at Twickenham. It was the away side who won 11 – 60 that day.
A number of other nations have taken on the Barbarians for this trophy over the years, including Argentina (2015 & 2018), South Africa (2016), an All Blacks XV (2022), and England. The encounter between England and the Barbarians took place on 27th May 2012, and it was the side then led by Eddie Jones who won 57 – 26.
This will not be the first time that Fiji have played for the Killik Cup – they have faced the Barbarians for this trophy on two previous occasions. They were defeated 43 – 19 on the first occasion in 2013 before narrowly beating the Barbarians 31 – 33 at Twickenham Stadium on 16th November 2019.
The Barbarians are a historic club that was founded all the way back in 1890. Membership to this club is invitation only, as are the players themselves. They played their first ever match on 27th December 1890, when they were 4 – 9 winners against the Hartlepool Rovers.
It was in 2008 that this club recorded a result that still stands as their biggest ever win. It was against Belgium, who they beat by an emphatic margin of 10 – 84 on the 24th May of that year. Fast forward to the 29th May 2011, when the Barbarians were inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame, as was the founder of this club, William Percy Carpmael.
The honour of the record appearance holder and top try scorer for the Barbarians is jointly held by one player. This player is ex-Ireland international and former Leicester Tigers and London Irish Wing Tony O’Reilly. O’Reilly made 30 appearances for this club, scoring no less than 38 tries in that time.
Moving on to the Fiji National Rugby Team, they have been playing internationally since they took on Western Samoa in their first ever competitive game on 18th August 1924, where they won 0 – 6.
Over the years, the Fiji team have played in the Rugby World Cup on 9 occasions, reaching the Quarter Finals in their first ever tournament all the way back in 1987. They would go on to achieve this feat twice more – in the 2007 tournament and again in the most recent World Cup in 2023. Fiji were beaten 30 – 24 in the 2023 Quarter Final.
