The British Army and Royal Navy return to Allianz Stadium, Twickenham on Saturday 1st May 2027 for the latest chapter in one of military rugby’s longest-running rivalries.
The history of the Army v Navy Rugby fixture stretches back to 1878, when the two Services first met at Kennington Oval. The annual Inter Service fixture was established in 1907, with the Royal Navy winning that year’s match 15–14 at Queen’s Club.
Following the First World War, the fixture moved to Twickenham in 1920. The Royal Navy won the first Army v Navy match staged there 23–11, beginning an association with the stadium that has now lasted for more than a century.
The Inter Service Championship was suspended during both World Wars before returning in 1920 and 1946 respectively. The competition continued to evolve, with women’s and veterans’ competitions introduced in 2003, while the 2020 and 2021 Championships were cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The most recent men’s meeting produced a memorable contest at Allianz Stadium in May 2026.
The Royal Navy defeated the British Army 41–36, securing consecutive Inter Service Championship titles for the first time since 1974 after the Army had fought back to level the match late in the second half.
That result adds another layer of rivalry ahead of the 2027 Army v Navy double-header, when the Senior Men meet at 14:00, followed by the Senior Women at 16:45.
Enjoy this historic sporting occasion from your own VIP Twickenham Private Box, offering a private setting for entertaining clients, colleagues, friends or family while enjoying both Army v Navy fixtures.
