Following the draw for the fifth round of the 2024/25 FA Cup, Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United are set to go toe to toe with a Fulham outfit led by a fellow Portuguese Head Coach, Marco Silva. This game is set to take place at Old Trafford in March 2025, with the Red Devils looking to strengthen their chances of retaining this historic trophy with a victory at the Theatre Of Dreams.
To reach this stage of the competition, United have had to negotiate a through the third and fourth rounds of this season’s competition. In the Third Round of the FA Cup, United game up against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in North London. Starting with their Round Three tie, they came up against Fulham at Craven Cottage, who they were able to emphatically and comfortably beat EFL Championship outfit Watford 4 – 1. Goals for Silva’s side came through Rodrigo Muniz (26’), Raul Jimenez (49’ – Penalty), Joachim Andersen (65’), and Timothy Castagne (85’). Rocco Vata was the sole goal scorer for Tom Cleverley’s Hornets on that day (33’).
Then, in Round Four of the FA Cup this season, League One Club Wigan Athletic were their opponents, with the Cottagers taking on the former Premier League outfit at the DW Stadium. It was a 2 – 1 victory for the team from West London, who managed to score thanks to goals from Rodrigo Muniz (23’, 55’). Jonny Smith was the only goal scorer for the third tier hosts on that day (50’).
Manchester United are the current holders of the historic FA Cup, winning it for the 13th time after they were 2 – 1 winners against their fierce cross-city rivals Manchester City at Wembley, thanks to goals from Alejandro Garnacho (30’) and Kobbie Mainoo (39’). Belgium international forward Jeremy Doku was the only goal scorer for Pep Guadiola’s Cityzens in this game (87’).
United’s other 12 FA Cup triumphs came in 1908/09 (1 – 0 vs. Bristol City), 1947/48 (4 – 2 vs. Blackpool), 1962/63 (3 – 1 vs. Leicester City), 1976/77 (2 – 1 vs. Liverpool), 1982/83 (4 – 0 vs. Brighton – Replay), 1984/85 (1 – 0 vs. Everton), 1989/90 (1 – 0 vs. Crystal Palace – Replay), 1993/94 (4 – 0 vs. Chelsea), 1995/96 (1 – 0 vs. Liverpool), 1989/99 (2 – 0 vs. Newcastle United), 2003/04 (3 – 0 vs. Millwall), and in 2015/16 (2 – 1 vs. Crystal Palace).
As for Fulham, they have never won the FA Cup in their entire history to date. The closest they have come is when they made their first and so far only FA Cup Final appearance all the way back in the 1974/75 season when they were defeated 2 – 0 by West Ham United.
Overall, Manchester United and Fulham have met a total of 15 times in the FA Cup to date, and it is United who have had the most victories so far, with 9 compared with the Cottagers’ 2. Their most recent FA Cup encounter was in the Quarter Final of the competition back on 19th March 2023. The Red Devils were able to beat their West London counterparts 3 – 1 following goals from Bruno Fernandes (75’ – Penalty & 90’) and Marcel Sabitzer (77’). Aleksandar Mitrovic was the only goal scorer for Fulham on that day (50’).
