Two Giants of English and European Football are set to go toe to toe when Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United take on Arsenal at Old Trafford in the 2024/25 Premier League season. With a return to the Champions League being targeted, a victory against Mikel Arteta’s Gunners would certainly enhance their chances of doing just that.
Erik Ten Hag left his position as Manchester United Head Coach in October 2024, with Ruben Amorim taking over as his successor at the club, joining from Portuguese Heavyweights Sporting CP.
The 2022/23 season was former Head Coach Ten Hag’s first in charge of United, and it was a successful one, with the Dutchman leading the club to third place in the Premier League table after securing a total of no less than 75 points from their 38 matches – qualification for the UEFA Champions League had been secured. United did win the League Cup at Wembley after goals from Casemiro (33’) and Marcus Rashford (39’) secured a 2 – 0 win against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United.
Last season, his second at the helm, saw his side get knocked out at the Group Stages of the UEFA Champions League, whilst the 60 points they earned from their 38 Premier League matches was enough for 8th place. However, there was a very positive ending to the season, when goals from Alejandro Garnacho (30’) and Kobbie Mainoo (39’) secured them a famous 2 – 1 win against local rivals Manchester City to win the 2024 FA Cup. This was the 6th time that the club had won this in its illustrious history.
This win in the FA Cup Final from last season saw them secure qualification for the 2024/25 Europa League.
New Head Coach Ruben Amorim will be hoping to return the club to the UEFA Champions League, whilst targeting silverware in other competitions over the course of the 2024/25 season.
Moving on to Arsenal, Mikel Arteta was appointed as Gunners boss on 20 December 2019, and at the end of his first half-season in charge (2019/20), the Spaniard led them to a 5th-place finish. Then, in the last two seasons, the North London Club has finished as runners-up twice in a row. They missed out on the 2023/24 Premier League title to Manchester City by a margin of just 2 points.
There have been some particularly memorable matches between these two clubs over the years. One that will be a particularly positive memory for Manchester United fans will be their emphatic 8 – 2 Premier League victory against the Gunners at Old Trafford on Sunday 28th August 2011. Danny Welbeck (22’), Ashley Young (28’, 90+1’), Wayne Rooney (41’, 64’, 82’ – Penalty), Nani (67’) and Park Ji-Sung (70’) all scored for United that day. For the Gunners, it was Theo Walcott (45+3’) and Robin Van Persie (74’) who scored for them.
To date, these two clubs have met in a competitive fixture in all competitions on 240 occasions. As of the time of writing, United has the most victories, with 101, compared to the Gunners’ total of 89. So far, there have been 50 draws between these two clubs.
Manchester United and Arsenal are set to go head to head at Old Trafford in the 2024/25 Premier League season. This game is set to be intense, enthralling, and highly competitive, with a tremendous atmosphere to boot at Old Trafford.
