The Manchester Derby is amongst the most high-profile matches not only in English Football, but also in the world as a whole. Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are set to face each other in the latest chapter of this long standing and fierce rivalry at the iconic and historic Old Trafford during the 2025/26 Premier League season.
If United do go on to get the better of their cross-city rivals, then the Red Devils would not only secure the vital three points, it would also see them claim valuable local bragging rights. Victory would provide fresh momentum as well as put them a step closer to realising their ambitions for the season, which is to secure a return to European Football via a top-seven finish in the league.
It is the aforementioned Ruben Amorim who is, of course, the current Head Coach of Manchester United Football Club. He began his tenure with United on Monday, 11th November, which came just weeks after an official announcement was made about his appointment, where he was chosen as the successor to Erik Ten Hag, who had left the club shortly before.
Amorim took charge at around the halfway point in the 2024/25 season, and in those first few months in charge, he led his side to what was a 15th place finish after a total of 42 points from their 38 games in total. They did, though at least come away from last season on a high, which came in the form of their thoroughly deserved 2 – 0 victory over their West Midlands counterparts Aston Villa thanks to goals from the likes of Amad Diallo (76’) and Christian Eriksen (87’), who had scored from the penalty spot late on in the game in the second half.
Moving on to Manchester City, their Spanish Head Coach Pep Guardiola has been in charge ever since he took over just before the start of the 2016/17 season following confirmation of his appointment back on Monday 1st February 2016. He replaced his predecessor Manuel Pellegrini, who saw out the remainder of the 2015/16 season ahead of Guardiola’s arrival.
Overall, in Pep’s almost decade in charge of the Cityzens, he has led them to as many as 18 trophies across all competitions, which are as follows: 6 Premier League titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2020/21, 2021/22/ 2022/23 & 2023/24), 2 FA Cups (2018/19 & 2022/23), 4 Carabao Cup titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 & 2020/21), 3 FA Community Shield titles (2018, 2019 & 2024), 1 UEFA Champions League title (2022/23), 1 UEFA Super Cup title (2023), and finally 1 FIFA Club World Cup (2023).
Last season (2024/25), his City side failed in their attempt to retain the title, finishing in 3rd place behind runner-up Arsenal and title winners Liverpool on 71 points after completing all 38 league matches.
The last time that these two teams came face to face in a competitive fixture in all competitions came in the Premier League back on 6th April 2025 in what was a 0 – 0 draw at Old Trafford. United did beat City in the league last season, doing so at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday 15th December 2024 in what was a 2 – 1 victory for the Red Devils.
City’s Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol did indeed initially give the hosts the lead in the latter stages of the first half before two quickfire goals from the likes of Bruno Fernandes (88’ – Penalty) and Amad Diallo (90’) in second half stoppage time sealed what was a memorable derby day victory for the Red Devils.
Overall, Manchester United and Manchester City have met competitively in all competitions on no less than 196 occasions, and it is United who do have the superior record of as many as 80 victories compared with City’s 62 to date. There have also been 54 draws between these two teams so far, as of the time of writing.
